UK: Gosden Duo For Champions Day

3 minute read

Newmarket trainer John Gosden is planning to be represented in Saturday's Group One Dewhurst Stakes by Fencing.

The seven-furlong contest, which is worth £317,000, is the highlight of the seven-race card at Newmarket on Saturday, October 8, Dubai Future Champions Day.

Fencing, a two-year-old son of Street Cry, was a promising third on his debut over seven furlongs at Newmarket's July Course on July 23 and duly built on that effort with a comfortable two and half-length success in the Listed Washington Singer Stakes over seven furlongs at Newbury on August 13.

Gosden said today: “Fencing will take his chance in the Dewhurst if the ground isn't too quick.

“He had a spot on his back which stopped us running in the Royal Lodge but he seems well now and I'm very happy with him.”

Dubai Future Champions Day opens with the £80,000 Group Two Burj Khalifa Challenge Stakes (2.05pm), a seven-furlong contest for three-year-olds and upwards.

Maqaasid is set to represent Gosden in this race and the three-year-old filly boasts excellent form on the Rowley Mile, having finished third in the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes in 2010 and third in this season's QIPCO 1000 Guineas.

The trainer continued: “Maqaasid heads to the Challenge.

“She has been working very nicely at home and I think seven furlongs is her optimum trip.

“She had a good spring, things went off a bit in the summer but hopefully she will have a good autumn.”
