Action Point’s victory in the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury on Friday marked a second Stakes win for first-season sire Blue Point.
Successful on debut in a Kempton Park novice stakes over five furlongs in April, Action Point was Blue Point's first winner on the track and went on to place second in the competitive Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Trial Conditions Stakes at Ascot. The Archie Watson-trained colt was drawn on the wrong side of the track when disappointing in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at the Royal meeting subsequently, finishing an eventual fifteenth and losing a right-fore shoe.
Stepping up to six furlongs for the first time, Action Point made all in the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes for jockey Hollie Doyle. He was asked to produce an effort at the one furlong marker and edged left slightly, but finished off the race well to score by one-and-a-half lengths ahead of Clive Cox's Shagreen with the heavily backed Asadna back in third.
Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock, Action Point is the first Black Type winner out of un-raced dam Khaleesi Wind (Exceed and Excel) and was purchased by the vendor Barton Stud for 45,000 guineas at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale (Book 2) in 2022. In 2021, a half-sister by Cracksman had fetched 20,000 guineas in Book 3 and the 2018 colt by Slade Power only achieved 16,000 guineas in the same sale in 2019.
Dam Khaleesi Wind was a full-sister to Listed Achilles Stakes winner Excelette, who placed fifteen times and showed plenty of speed during her juvenile campaign. Likewise, half-brother Rapid Applause (Royal Applause) was sharp enough at two to finish second in the six furlong Group 3 Round Tower Stakes at the Curragh and continued to win races until the age of six.
Further back in the pedigree, the un-raced third dam Mainly Dry (The Brianstan) was a revelation at stud, producing nine individual winners from her twelve runners. The best of these was Bolshoi (Royal Academy), who scored in the Group 2 King's Stand Stakes (regained Group 1 status in 2008) and the Group 2 Temple Stakes. Although not a Black Type winner herself, Mainly Dry's 1988 foal Ellebanna (Tina's Pet) was responsible for Listed winner Mine and her daughter Ducie features in the pedigrees of precocious French juvenile Black Type winners Cosachope and Livachope.
Action Point currently holds entries for the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at York in late August, the Doncaster Weatherbys £300,000 Two-Year-Old Stakes and the Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar.
