South African-bred galloper Lizarre did his chances of gaining a start in next month’s International Group 1 $3 million Singapore Airlines International Cup over 2000m no harm with his victory in the Group 3 $150,000 Admiralty Classic Stakes over 1600m on Sunday.

Classy stayer Lizarre bounced back to his sparkling best in the most auspicious way by taking out the first feature race of the year, the $200,000 Group 3 New Year Cup (1900m) on Tuesday.

Trainer Patrick Shaw was on cloud nine when he saddled the quinella of the Singapore Gold Cup six years ago, but he remains down-to-earth about any chance of lightning striking twice with another duo in the time-honoured showpiece this Sunday.
