Timeform Review - South Australian Derby Day

3 minute read

Darren Weir made it three South Australian Derbies in a row when Leicester won the Group 1 2500m classic at Morphettville on Saturday.

Winner of the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes at his final lead-up run, Leicester joined Volatile Mix and Howard Be Thy Name as South Australian Derby winners for Weir in the past three years.

Leicester went into the race as somewhat of a distance query but fought hard in the straight to win by 1.5 lengths from Rezealient and Runaway.

Leicester returned a Timeform rating of 108, which was below the figure reached by his stablemates over the last two years (Volatile Mix 110; Howard Be Thy Name 111) and was the lowest-rating SA Derby win since Shadows In The Sun (107) in 2011.

It was a career peak for Leicester though and his third time rating in triple figures, improving from the 105 he recorded when winning the Chairman’s.

Peaceful State.

Talented colt Peaceful State made it two straight wins during the Adelaide carnival when taking out the Listed Adelaide Guineas (1600m).

A raging favourite after an impressive win in the Nitschke Stakes, Peaceful State did it the hard way and had to call on his reserves to edge out Over Exposure and Sircconi.

Peaceful State rated 102 for his win, a figure shared by both placegetters.

That number is well below the 120 he returned when runner up in the Group 1 Australian Guineas and a little shy of the 104 he recorded when winning the Nitschke.

It was, however, the highest rated Adelaide Guineas win since Alpha Beat (105) in 2014.

Two-year-old Tequila Time maintained his unbeaten record this campaign when scoring his fourth straight win in the Group 3 SA Sires' Produce Stakes (1600m).

Stepping up to 1400m for the first time, Tequila Time showed all of his fighting qualities to again deny Fundamentalist for a second straight Group 3 win after taking out the Breeders’ Stakes last month.

Tequila Time returned a Timeform rating of 104 to equal the career peak he produced in the Breeders’.

It was the highest rated winning performance in a SA Sires since Cute Emily’s 105 in 2011.

Like Peaceful State and Tequila Time, winners of two of the earlier features on the card as well as here two weeks ago, Leicester proved that last start winning form holds up well and he was yet again too good for his staying rivals. Damian Lane found a nice spot in fifth, one off the fence out of the straight with a circuit to run, moving into fourth starting down the back. He held his position past the 1000m to the 600m then crept a little closer and had a great view, four out, turning for home. Lane asked the question at the 200m and the gelding ranged alongside at the 100m before edging away to win convincingly by a length and half, his fourth win in nine starts for earnings of $535,730. Rezealient was midfield at the 600m, ran wide turning in and kept up a strong run but was never going to catch the winner. Runaway did really well to hold third after setting the pace and fought back when headed at the 200m. Tropical Lightning was second into the straight and kept battling to the line for a good fourth.
