Obamburumai became the first overseas winner. Will it occur again for the 2024 Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday?

2024 GOLDEN EAGLE - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Golden Eagle is a feature race run under Set Weights conditions for four year olds at Rosehill conducted by the Australian Turf Club.

The Golden Eagle is run over 1500m. 2019 was the first running of the race.

There is no other feature race in the country for 4yos only.

Being run for prize money of $10,000,000, 10% of that prizemoney is immediately donated to the winning owners' charity of choice.

Designed to keep the four year olds in training, there is an option for Everest horses to step up in trip as well.

It will be the richest race run at Rosehill and one of the top three in the country.

Also run on the same day are new races the $3m Winner's Stakes (run each year under the name of the previous year's Everest winner) and the $750,000 Rosehill Gold Cup.

The first winner was Kolding who had won the Epsom at his previous run. It meant Chris Waller trained the winner of the Everest and Golden Eagle inside a fortnight – races worth more than $21m in stakes.

It was the Epsom again in 2020 as the Oaks winner Colette came through the mile race to get up late on a wet track at Rosehill.

Year Three saw yet another G1 winner take the Eagle as the Victorian I'm Thunderstruck rattled home. In Year Four it was the Melbournians again with I Wish I Win staving off a flood of G1 winners to score.

The first international winner occurred in 2023 as Japan's Obamburumai surged from well back to nab the Godolphin pair in the shadows.

The 2023 Golden Eagle was won by Obamburumai from Pericles and Golden Mile.
