The Tasmanian Turf Club in Launceston host a feature night of racing on Wednesday, headlined by the $125,000 InSeries Electrical+Solar Conquering Stakes at Listed Level.
Expectations are high for the meeting after a terrific Newmarket night a fortnight ago.
The rail is in the +7m 1200m-W/Post, +6m Remainder position with fine weather forecast.
R1 Inseries 24:hr Solar Battery Specialist class 3 Hcp, 1200m
Periwinkle(6) has returned in good form with two solid placings, has an excellent record this track, and maps for every chance. STARS IN THE NIGHT (10) led all the way last week this track and trip in solid time. She had the inside gate last week, now draws out, and strikes a deeper race. BINE (2) had excuses from her wide gate last start, her best goes close. PEROLA (3) was doing her best work late first-up, extra 100m suits. REGATTA (1) is the query runner. He was formerly trained in NSW and has trialled okay, check betting. GEEGEES CITY BOY (5) was disappointing first up when an unplaced favourite and now gets a couple of gear changes. His best is competitive.
Staking Strategy: Periwinkle is building nicely this time in and will be hard to hold out in a very competitive race. 1 unit to win PERIWINKLE (6)
R2 Inseries Zero $$ Deposit Solar Class 1 Hcp, 1200m
What a win by Silver Dagger (11) at this venue a fortnight ago. A brilliant maiden winner, she was classes above her opposition. Clear top pick. UNCLE'S TIP (8) is also fresh out of maiden grade. If Silver Dagger can't get the job done, she's next in line. LISPECTOR (7) was third-placed first up when wide throughout and over raced badly (again) when being restrained. Strips fitter, has each-way claims. HUBUBBAJAHN returned a winner here, leading and digging in deep to hold out the even money favourite. She still has upside. LOYALTY BLUES (3) next best, then RED FOX (4).
Staking Strategy: Silver Dagger won her maiden in a manner which suggested there's a lot more wins in store. 7 units to win SILVER DAGGER (11)
R3 Ladbrokes Maiden, 1200m
This looks a very good race for Celtic Rose (10). She's been close-up at her past three runs and strikes a moderate maiden. Blinkers go on for the 1st time. HIGHLAND DUEL (7) was solid on debut behind a smart winner. Draws to get a similar run in transit from Gate 1. ICE CRYSTAL (11) comes through the same race and ran better than her beaten margin might suggest after covering ground. TROTSKY (4) has been off the scene for some time. There was merit in both career runs at the end of last year. May pay to keep him safe.
Staking Strategy: Celtic Rose won't find a better opportunity to win her maiden. There's a serious lack of opposition. 7 units to win CELTIC ROSE (10)
R4 Animal Medical Centre Bm68 Hcp, 1600m
Conumdrum(2) has returned in great order. The winning margin last time was only narrow but he only saw daylight late. He'll eat up the 1600m. SUSHI EXPRESS (1) looked to just peak on his run second -up. That would've topped him nicely for this assignment. ISLAND WARRIOR (3) was never in contention from her bad gate last start. She's going better than her form reads. The rise in distance helps. KINGS ON QUEENS's (4) win last time had merit, coming from the tail of the field in a slowly run race. LI'L HAIL MARY (7) can improve off last start and gets in well after the claim.
Staking Strategy: There's 3-4 really good hopes. Island Warrior is good odds, gets in well after the claim, and stepping out to the 1600m is a big plus. 2 units each-way ISLAND WARRIOR (3)
R5 Steve's Liquor 3yo Trophy, 1400m
The majority of runners come via the 3yo Cup, won narrowly by Ms Tasmania. Mastretta(8) was a good roughie in that race and she ran very well. She stepped away slowly, was a clear last in the early stages, and she did a good job to finish within a length of the winner given the lack of tempo. AZONTO (7) finished alongside Mastretta. She also found the line nicely after settling worse than midfield. Both MAGNAPRIME (1) and GO JEANIE (6) rode the speed and went down fighting but thought they both had their chance given the lack of early pressure.
Staking Strategy: Mastretta got too far back last time after blowing the start. The rise in distance looks perfect for her. 2 units each-way MASTRETTA (8)
R6 Inseries Electrical+solar Conquering Stakes, 1400m
Every runner in this race – bar two – went around in the Newmarket. The Inevitable (1) was beaten 0.5 length that night and carried 61kg, having to concede plenty of weight to all of his rivals. Under WFA conditions, and with average luck, he should be winning. Won't be surprised if he starts deep into the red. AND BEYOND (10) jumped away cleanly for a change in the Newmarket, sat close to the hot speed and held on extremely well. GEEGEES GEMSTONE (8) and THESPIAN WATERS (11) have to overcome a 7kg swing in the relative weights but are both in terrific form. BELLO BEAU (2) had no favours at all in the Newmarket from his bad gate. Can improve sharply. HYPE (7) lost all hope at the start, tailing out to a clear last after 100m. He was good under the circumstances.
Staking Strategy: Happy to be The Inevitable but won't be getting too involved at the short-odds that are on offer. 2 units to win THE INEVITABLE (1)
R7 Craig Hanson Memorial Class 5 Hcp, 1400m
Zulu Angel (3) can run well fresh off an 8-week break. He went close first up this preparation. JUST A NEEDS (1) wasn't flash away resuming and simply got too far out of her ground. Small field suits. Only one win here from 8 tries is the knock. ASVA (2) is seldom far away in these races. He was a dominant winner here 3 starts back. MANDATE (5) could be dangerous with a light weight if allowed to dictate terms DID YOU DECIDE (6) is another with no weight that wasn't far off them last start and should be spot on fourth run back.
Staking Strategy: Zulu Angel has been super consistent since changing stables and has shown in the past that he can be very competitive fresh. 1 unit to win ZULU ANGEL (3)
R8 Sejal's Coffee Youngtown Bm70 Hcp, 2100m
No fewer than 6 or 7 of them have a case. A number of runners are very well placed after their claims. No more so than Vintage Diesel (7) who drops 8kg from last week against similar opposition. That hit-out over the 2100m should have brought him along nicely. His stablemate LAUNNIE NIGHTS (9) finished alongside him. He too, gets good weight relief. METAVERSE (2) and JOHNNIE PINCH (5) are very honest and are regularly deep into the finish in these Benchmark races. PENNINE (3) signalled she was getting close to her best in Hobart but may need one more run for her to be at her peak. ALWAYS A WINNER (6) is racing consistently and has to be rated a good each-way hope.
Staking Strategy: Vintage Diesel appreciated rising in trip last start and will strip fitter. Good light weight chance in an even contest. 1 unit to win VINTAGE DIESEL (7)
