Fillies' Mile
The Fillies' Mile is a Group 1 race run under Set Weight conditions for two year old fillies at Newmarket conducted by the Jockey Club.
The Fillies' Mile is run over the straight mile. It was first run in 1973 and was won by Escorial.
Originally over the mile at Ascot, it was transferred to Newmarket in 2011 as part of the Future Champions day.
It began as a Group 3 then a Group 2 in 1986, then a Group 1 in 1990.
Two of the better winners of the Fillies' Mile are Bosra Sham, who'd win a 1000 Guineas, Champion Stakes and Prince Of Wales's Stakes and Minding who, after winning here went on a spree in 2016 taking the 1000 Guineas, Oaks, Pretty Polly, Nassau and QEII.
Leading trainer is held by Henry Cecil with 6 victories along with Aidan O'Brien plus John Gosden who has 4 by himself and 2 with Thady while most wins as a jockey is by Frankie Dettori with seven.
While Aidan O'Brien has six successes, his son Joseph beat him home via Iridessa in 2018. Joseph won again in 2020.
The 2020 running was made famous when the two Aidan O'Brien fillies in the race carried the wrong saddle cloths and wrong riders. As a result, BHA Stewards completed their investigation and amended the placings with Mother Earth* now officially third and Snowfall eighth.
The irony of those horses being involved was that in the following season, Mother Earth would win the 1000 Guineas and Snowfall won the Oaks.
Inspiral had a delayed start to her 3yo career but after winning this would take the Coronation Stakes so impressively.
The Fillies' Mile was worth £500,000 in 2024.
Notable winners of the Fillies' Mile include Desert Flower (2024), Commissioning (2022), Inspiral (2021), Pretty Gorgeous (2020), Quadrilateral (2019), Rhododendron (2016), Minding (2015), Rainbow View (2008), Nannina (2005), Soviet Song (2002), Bosra Sham (1995), Oh So Sharp (1984), Height Of Fashion (1981), Quick As Lightning (1979) and Cherry Hinton (1977).
