AFL: Lions look to boost top-eight hopes

3 minute read

A place in the top eight could be on the line when Brisbane and Melbourne clash at the Gabba on Friday night.

Neither side are where they want to be right now after performing below expectations in 2024, but a place in finals is a must, and there is work to be done.

Thankfully for both sides it is tight. Just one win separates Brisbane in 10th and Fremantle in fifth, so a couple of wins can soon have you flying up the ladder.

Melbourne are in ninth spot and are priced at 2.25 to make the eight, while the Lions, who are two points below them can be backed at 1.50.

It makes Friday night's clash even more important and Brisbane will be hoping home advantage can help get the job done.

The Demons are out of sorts and it will be viewed as an upset if they can leave the Gabba with all four points.

Brisbane on a roll

Brisbane are finally starting to find some consistency this season after winning their last three games on the bounce.

They should be full of belief following their latest win, which saw them put on 152 points against Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval.

The 79-point win moved them to within two points of the top eight and they will be out to keep the good times rolling against the Demons.

Brisbane were kicking goals for fun against Port with Eric Hipwood top-scoring with five goals, while Joe Daniher and Oscar McInerney also helped themselves to three each.

Hipwood can be backed at 10.00 to boot the first goal of the game against Port, while Daniher is priced at 8.50.

Lachie Neale was also on fire against Port Adelaide when collecting 37 disposals during the victory.

The two-time Brownlow Medal winner can be backed at 4.33 to carry on where he left and collect 35+ against Melbourne.

The last time the two sides met at the Gabba, Brisbane won by 11 points, but they will be hoping for a bigger margin this season.

They can be backed at 5.50 to win by 25-36 points.

Demons eye Gabba upset

Melbourne returned to winning ways in round 15, but were far from convincing as they edged out North Melbourne by just three points.

It was just their second win in the last five games and they need to turn things around if they are to make the top eight.

Coach Simon Goodwin is not being helped by a crippling injury list and it will take some effort to pick up a win in Brisbane.

The two sides have already met this season. That was back in round 5 when the Lions won by 22 points at the MCG.

If Melbourne are to cause a boilover it will be tight, and they can be backed at 9.00 to win by 1-12 points.

Bayley Fritsch will also be their biggest threat up forward, and he can be backed at 12.00 to boot the first goal of the game, or 1.13 to score at anytime.
