Simon Thomas' race-by-race Rosehill Gardens Preview - 15th June 2024

3 minute read

Racing And Sports form analyst Simon Thomas provides his race-by-race Rosehill Gardens preview, thanks to tab.com.au.

Rosehill Gardens plays host to this Saturday's meeting where we see a strong ten-race winter card, with the highlight being the Listed KIA Winter Cup over 2400m.

The Waller and Neasham stables look to have genuine chances throughout the day, but it's a progressive three-year-old gelding from the Gerald Ryan yard that I have labelled my best bet. Read on for our preview of the full ten-race card, thanks to tab.com.au.

RACE 1 – 11am: Chandon 2YO Handicap (1400m)

Depth Of Character  (3) unwanted in betting on debut when swamped them late for a tenacious maiden victory over 1250m at Canterbury on May 29. McEvoy takes the ride and looks up to this jumping out to the 1400m. Goodlucktome (5) well bred colt who started hard in the market on debut when a fighting second from the wide gate over 1200m at Kembla Grange on May 28. Strips fitter now and drawn to stalk the speed. Expected to figure prominently. Sovereign Hill (1) fitter after two runs back and much better performance when a tiring second over 1300m here on June 1. Expected to go close again although the last 50m will be of concern. Swiftfalcon (4) improving with racing and gives the impression this trip and further will suit. Warmed up late when a fast finishing second over 1200m at Randwick on May 25. Wide draw makes it tough but sure to be strong late. The chances don't end there.

Tip: Backing Depth Of Character to win at $4.40 with tab.com.au

RACE 2 – 11.35am: Midway BM72 Handicap (1200m)

Glenbower (14) created a good impression when resumed for second prep with a dominant 2.75 len victory over 1200m at Newcastle on May 9. Kept fresh and looks to have the upside to contest this much stronger contest with the 54kg from the low draw. Cripps Tonite (5) second-up today and proven in this company. Looked good when winning over this trip three back before tiring late on resumption when ninth over 1100m here on June 1. Will go forward and take catching. Navy Blood (4) disappointed second-up when a tiring seventh over 1400m at Randwick on May 25. Best form is over this trip and go on his first-up victory when assessing his chances. Looks great each way value. Sumo Star (16) enigmatic gelding who tired late over the 1400m when in this company at Randwick on May 25. Gets in light again with the 2kg claim and can sneak into the minor money back to the 1200m.

RACE 3 – 12.10pm: TAB Highway C3 Handicap (1400m)

Know Thyself (2) lightly raced gelding who looks destined for better company. Wound up strongly with the 60kg when an unlucky second as favourite over 1250m at Canterbury on resumption. Undefeated second-up and over this trip and gets all the map favours. Ensign Parker (9) improving gelding who was a month between runs when a gritty sixth over 1200m at Randwick on May 25. Can hold a forward position and give plenty of cheek. Silver Halo (3) Scone-trained filly with the three wins from four starts. Going nicely through her grades and came with a well-timed run when a nose winner over 1300m at Scone on May 17. McEvoy takes the ride and looks solid each way value. Barcelona Express (8) racing in career best form and hard fit for this. Deserves his shot here after smashing his rivals over 1300m at Armidale last time out. Drops sharply in weight with the claim and adds value to the exotics.

RACE 4 – 12.45pm: James Squire BM78 Handicap (2000m)

Perfect Play (7) improving imported gelding near his top now after two runs back. Sound again when he returned good final splits to finish a close-up third over 1700m at Scone on May 18. Expected to race closer to the speed and will keep improving as he gets out in trip. Go close. For Victory (3) racing in career best form and stretches out to the 2000m for the first time today. Drifted back before powering late with the 58.5kg when second over 1700m at Scone on May 18. Has more to give this prep and can easily pounce on these late. Principessa (6) has needed the last two runs to bring her to her peak and was a slick winner over the 1900m five back in soft going. Drop in weight suits and has the numbers to take this out. Kureder (5) dour type back in grade here after having no luck from the wide draw when fourth over this trip at Randwick on May 25. Can race a little closer and take a hand in the finish.

Tip: Backing Perfect Play to win at $4.40 with tab.com.au

RACE 5 – 1.20pm: TAB BM72 Handicap (1400m)

Demiana (14) improving mare back in class today after showing plenty of fight when a long neck winner over 1200m at Warwick Farm in BM78 grade on June 5. Backs-up quickly and should have little trouble getting the 1400m in this easier contest. Captain Furai (5) progressive gelding who was no match for the promising Franz Josef when second over 1500m here on June 1. Parr keeps the ride and will need a good ride early from the sticky gate. Ivan's Hero (15) mixing his form of late and worth noting all three wins have come over the 1400m. Drawn to stalk the solid tempo from the low draw and will prove hard to hold out if he gains a start. How Dare You (8) well supported on resumption when swooped late for a slick win over 1300m at Scone in easier class on May 17. Clearly come back much stronger and has the upside to be thereabouts again.

Tip: Backing Demiana each way at $9.50/$3.20 with tab.com.au

Passeggiata (2) speedy mare who looks placed to advantage in this class from the low draw. Comes out of a strong race after sitting on the pace for a tough second over 1000m at Randwick in BM78 grade on May 25. The 2kg claim helps and will prove hard to run down. In Flight (14) lightly raced Joe Pride trained filly who rounded them up effortlessly in easier class first-up before disappointing as fav when sixth over 1100m here on June 1. Firmer track helps and sure to give plenty of cheek from the soft gate. Hanau (5) Godolphin gelding resuming with ability. Finished in the money at five of his six outings and since fitted with two searching trials. McEvoy has been booked and looks primed for this. Everyone's A Star (1) racing in career best form and is carrying the big weights well. Goes well this track and trip after running on late when a gritty second over 1100m here on June 1. Speycaster (8) ready for the 2400m now and sharp improvement is expected after running below his best when 11th over 2000m at Randwick on May 25. Go on his strong win two back at Newcastle when assessing his chances. Franz Josef (6) progressive Snitzel gelding who can go quickly through his grades over the winter months. Gave them a galloping lesson from the wide gate when led throughout to score a slick 1.5 len win over 1500m here on June 1. This tougher but should prove too sharp again from the low draw. Nails Murphy (9) disappointed second-up and can return to form here with the tongue-tie added after finishing 12th over 1400m at Randwick on May 25. Parr sticks and best figures measure up nicely. Sharp improver. Allapercanto (15) starting to put it all together now and chasing her third straight victory. Rounded them up effortlessly with the 58kg when a smart 2.75 len winner over 1550m at Canterbury as favourite on May 29. Look for her late on the limit. Captain Furai (16) showed a ton of ability in his first prep winning two of his three starts and has more to give after finishing runner-up to FRANZ JOSEF at latest.
