Fresh up from a last start win in the Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) on January 1st Material Man was too good taking his already excellent record to 12 wins (five stakes) in 21 starts for earnings of $1,133,575. He jumped away well but jockey Lucy Warwick allowed the six-year-old to drop back to be midfield, one off the fence, soon after. Warwick began a forward move at the 600m and turning in was four out, ready to pounce. Into the straight Warwick gave him loads of time to balance but at the 200m had crept into third, bearing down on the leader. He cruised alongside inside the 100m, took over at the 50m then pulled clear to win nicely. Great Shot was second into the straight, led at the 300m and tried to break clear but inside the 100m was no match for the winner. Pounamu was third last turning in then kept up a strong run to grab third right on the line without endangering the first two. Gatting had every chance in the straight, losing third in the shadows of the post.
