Chris Scholtz reviews barrier trials at Rosehill on September 3; Gosford on August 30 and Randwick on August 28.

ROSEHILL September 3

GLOBAL GLAMOUR, EF TROOP and NIETA were impressive winners in the quality heats of the morning while KRAMERIC, a colt by Rubick, took the eye with a professional win by a widening margin in the only 2YO trial of the morning.

FIVE TO FOLLOW

GLOBAL GLAMOUR (Gai Waterhouse/AdrianBott): Multiple G1 winner was having her second trial since the autumn and was a lot keener to perform in her 1030m heat than her first last month, jumping straight to the lead and doing it well within herself to win by a soft half length that could have easily been extended to a much bigger margin. She can make a statement during the spring, more than likely against her own sex.

EF TROOP (Tony Gollan): Classy Queensland 3YO had never been beaten in four previous trials and he kept that record intact with a sharp speed display, leading clearly and doing it easily to score by 3.5 lengths from the G1 winner ENGLISH in the fastest of the seven heats over 895m (53.69/last 600m 34.4). He was unlucky when beaten first-up in Brisbane and should be a serious threat in the right races for his age over the carnival up to 1200m.

JEN RULES (Peter & Paul Snowden): This Redoute’s Choice filly oozes quality. She won her debut at Canterbury in June on a heavy track and should be ready to take on something better after making an impression with her close third in her 895m heat against more seasoned rivals, closing strongly from five lengths off the lead with Kerrin McEvoy sitting quietly.

NIETA (John Thompson): Rarely performs poorly in trials and was on her game for this hitout over 895m, her first appearance since she was placed at the Sunshine Coast in June. Sat outside the leader then asserted herself when given a squeeze at the 350m, showing her good turn of foot to forge clear under no pressure and coast home with plenty in hand. Usually at her best when fresh – she’s won three times when first-up.

GOD OF THUNDER (Team Hawkes): Impressive More Than Ready colt has loads of potential and the ease of his trial win over 895m was a strong indicator that he has made the right development since his first two starts in May and June. Led under a hold before he dropped them in a stride with classy acceleration that saw him score under a hold by almost five lengths. Maiden special.

GOSFORD August 30

Several Group horses appeared with pass marks for the efforts of CHAMPAGNE CUDDLES, LEGEND OF CONDOR, PERAST and INVINCIBLE GEM being what you would expect from horses of their quality. Legend Of Condor finished second to Champagne Cuddles in their 1000m heat but made the better impression.

FIVE TO FOLLOW

TIP TOP (Les Bridge): Given a month off after an uncharacteristic effort at Rosehill on July 28 and sure to come on from this strong second over 1050m, beaten only a nose, after sitting three and four deep and pulling his way to the line under no pressure. Looks in good order and he usually produces his better runs when fresh.

MAGGIE MISS (Gai Waterhouse/.Adrian Bott): We noted the first trial win by this free running Medaglia D’Oro filly at Randwick on August 13 and this brilliant win by almost 13 lengths in the fastest of the seven heats over 1050m (1.03.02/last 600m 33.9) ensures she will be well found in the market place when she makes her debut.

SPENDING TO WIN (Peter & Paul Snowden): This outing over 740m was his first since he ended another consistent campaign in early June with a deserving win at the Sunshine Coast. Showed he is in the right form to add to his excellent record when he resumes by sitting three deep off the pace and travelling well within himself before he worked into second in the last 150m with plenty to offer. Has missed a place just twice in 18 starts and confidently expecting more of the same.

GALINA (Peter & Paul Snowden): Beaten six lengths finishing second to the speedy SHOW SOME LEG in the fastest 740m heat of the morning (43.01). While the unraced winner attracted most of the attention there was a lot of merit in Galina’s effort to work easily to the line without being asked to do any chasing. Liked the potential she showed in her fist prep last season and should take plenty of benefit from this trial.

SIR OWEN (Peter & Paul Snowden): Another well regarded 3YO maiden performer was given a good sound out to win his 740m heat by 6.5 lengths in a smart 43.61 in his first trial since he was placed on debut at Warwick Farm in May. Typical Fastnet Rock colt who should appreciate his patient handling.
