Meryl followed her good second in the Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Randwick on September 15 with a very smart win here, her second Group success in seven starts to date. After a quick beginning, Damien Oliver settled her nicely outside the leader (Setsuna) at a good tempo, dashed to the front at the home turn and went on to score quite impressively. Sweet Rockette raced in sixth place (three wide with cover), tracked up well nearing the home turn, put in a good run halfway down the straight and kept running on well to take a good second. Humma Humma had a nice trip in fifth place (between runners), got a split and went to second at the home turn and kept fighting on to take third. The favourite Golden Halo settled in ninth place, one off the rails, improved (wide with cover) from the 600m and kept making ground, without threatening for fourth. Tony McEvoy-trained filly Pierro Belle settled at the tail of the 12-horse field, got between runners coming to the home turn, switched deep on straightening and caught the eye with her late-closing fifth in a promising effort at only her third race start.
