Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt Thinkin' Big came firmly into calculations for the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) with a comfortable win here. Tim Clark got him smartly to the lead and the colt then settled well, really slowing the mid-race tempo before lifting the pace from the 600m. He turned for home with a clear advantage and went on to score easily by three lengths. Lightly-raced Chapada, followed his win in a maiden (1590m) at Wangaratta on October 4, when having his third start, with a promising effort, advancing in class here. He raced in fourth place, improved rounding the home turn and then battled on really well in the sprint home for second. Lindsay Park-trained colt Sikorsky raced outside the leader and eventual winner (Thinkin' Big), put some pressure on that running coming to the home turn and then held on for third, beaten just over five lengths. The favourite Extra Brut raced back in sixth place, one off the rails, was under riding when the pace finally increased nearing the home turn and just battled from that point to finish (5.9 lengths) sixth.
