Well-bred for Narvaez breaks maiden
The Gai Waterhouse and Gai Waterhouse-trained Narvaez (2 c ex Headway by Charge Forward) broke his maiden in the Welcome Back Owners 2YO Handicap (1600m) at Bendigo on Sunday at the fifth time of asking and in the process became the eighth winner for the Coolmore Stud-based sire Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro).
Bred by Makybe, the colt cost his trainers $300,000 at the 2019 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale from the Lime Country Thoroughbreds draft and on Sunday he defeated Galactic Fury (Street Boss) by a nose with another two and a quarter lengths back to Confrontational (Redoute’s Choice) in third.
The colt is out of 2009 Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Headway (Charge Forward), who also finished runner-up in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) as a two-year-old. Narvaez becomes the mare's third winner.
Headway herself is out of stakes-placed Flying Spur (Danehill) mare Chatelaine, who is herself the grandam of Let Me Sleep On It (Manhattan Rain).
In 2018 Headway produced a filly by Written Tycoon (Iglesia) and she slipped to Sebring (More Than Ready) the following season. She was most recently covered by Eureka Stud-based sire Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo). She was bought most recently by Rosemont Stud and Peter Moody Racing for $220,000 at the 2018 Inglis Chairman’s Sale.
Vancouver's first-crop also contains four stakes performers and he will stand the 2020 season at Coolmore Stud for a reduced fee of $30,250 (inc GST), having stood the 2019 term for $44,000 (inc GST).
