Five for Super Easy

Spine Tingle lands Oaks Prelude

The Chris Gibbs-trained Spine Tingle (3 f ex Myback by Dubawi) put herself bang in the picture for the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) as she produced a breath-taking performance in the Oaks Prelude (Listed, 1800m) at New Plymouth on Saturday and in so doing became the fifth stakes winner for her Hallmark Stud-based sire Super Easy (Darci Brahma).

Last sighted breaking her maiden at her second attempt over 1400 metres on January 7, the filly showed her rivals a clean pair of heels, eventually beating Providenceprovides (Real Impact) by four lengths. Ezdara (Sacred Falls) came home another length and quarter away in third.

“I didn’t really expect that, but she was very impressive today,” Gibbs said.

“We made a plan to hug the rail the whole way and hoped the leaders would roll off and sure enough they did.

“She races so well just off the bridle, which I just love about her.

“When Lisa (Allpress) asked her, she sprinted so quickly that I was stunned.

“When we first got her she looked like she would make a two-year-old and not much after that, but she changed completely and turned into a long, scopey individual, who had stayer written all over her.

“We haven’t done that much with her, so after she won her maiden at home, we decided this race would be our main target.

“I just didn’t know how she would measure up, but she travelled down perfectly, ate and drank everything last night and gave me confidence she would go a good race.”

Gibbs said he had not mapped out a path to the Oaks yet and would wait for the dust to settle before doing so.

“Today was really where we had put our efforts into, so I’m not sure what to do next,” he said.

“It’s a long trip back home so she can have an easy time of it while I work out how we get to the Oaks.

“The good thing is she has qualified now so I don’t have to worry about that and can pick and choose where we start.”

Bred and raced by the Hawkins family under their Llanhennock Trust banner, the filly is out of the winning Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) mare Myback, who has produced a further two winners.

Myback herself is half-sister to Listed winner Cauthen (Darci Brahma), while further afield this is the same family as Group 2 winner Grey Song (Unbridled’s Song) and Group 3 winner Tonz More Fun (More Than Ready).

Spine Tingle joins Group 3-winning trio Prom Queen, Sheezallmine, Easy Eddie and Super Strike as the stallion’s other stakes winners and he stood at Hallmark Stud for a fee of NZ$7,500 (plus GST) in 2020.

The winner of this Listed event for 3yo fillies only over 1800m was the impressive Spine Tingle that had come all the way down from Ruakaka. The filly trailed the leaders on the inner then came through on the inside and shot right away after leading at the 250 to win by four lengths in 1:51.27 The winners and where they came from on the home turn were second (neck back the inner), second (one-off the inside and a neck back), led (four length lead on the fence), third (one-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), third (one-off the inside and half a length from the leader), second (one-off the inside and a head from the leader), fourth (one-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), second (one-off the inside and five lengths from the leader) and sixth (four-off the inside and four lengths from the leader). It was the second win by Spine Tingle and her first outing at Stakes grade but just how good the field was she beat is doubtful at the moment as many were maidens. The way she put them away nothing in this field would beat her home until the distances got more in their favour regards breeding. Second home was the Australian bred Providenceprovides that raced handy the outer then moved up third wide across the top before reaching a distant second at the 150m. Third home was the maiden filly Ezdara that had been ninth at G2 two starts ago to show that the gap between the fillies can be very vast on any given day and direction. Today she sat second the outer and challenged the home turn before being headed at the 250m and then being third at the 100m. Absconded, also a maiden, soon led and once headed the run in weakened to fourth beaten five and a half lengths with the Australian bred filly far from disgraced. Fourth home was as Carolina Reaper that raced sixth or seventh the outer and she fought on okay centre track. Sixth home and running on eyecatchingly from second last to be beaten just under six and a half lengths was Signora Nera and she found the line like 2400m for her will be no trouble. She already has a G3 placing in her resume and when she gets to the big open spaces of Trentham for the NZ Oaks (2400m) her worth will be shown. Llancord fought on for seventh after racing eighth mostly and the maiden filly has not gone a bad race in her career so far. Swing The Tide, also a maiden filly, fought on from last on her own across the top and she was steered closer in the run home. Yolo was ninth home beaten just over seven lengths after being in the rear duo then twelfth turning for home angled up the middle. The rest got beaten nine lengths and as far as over seventeen lengths. Of that lot the forgive was the last filly home in Sumi that started favourite as she had a nightmare run wide in the open seventh then crept forward to fifth across the top. She was crowded and checked at the 250m when admittedly battling but her entire wide trip throughout was a forgettable one. The 3yo fillies this year have been weak overall and a lot of turns are being had and just where the stamina is to be found come the NZ Oaks (2400m) on March 20 is anyone's guess. Spine Tingle that is not bred to run a mile and a quarter absolutely pumped this field having won her maiden prior at home by a short head, so the 3yo filly picture is still very much up in the air.
