Zabeel’s (Sir Tristram) exploits as a broodmare sire are well documented, so it was no surprise to see plenty of competition for his Group 2-winning daughter Adrift at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale, with the hammer eventually falling in favour of Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock agency for $700,000.

Adrift is best-known for finishing in front of superstar Winx (Street Cry) in the Light Finger Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) in 2015.

The daughter of Zabeel is a half-sister to Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) winner Xiong Feng (Iffraaj), while her unraced dam Stray (Tale Of The Cat) is a half-sister of multiple Group 1 winner Maldivian (Zabeel).

Segenhoe Stud sold the first yearling out of the mare for $1,050,000 to Guy Mulcaster and Chris Waller at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year.

The mare was offered by Segenhoe Stud in foal to Coolmore Stud stallion Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) and the resulting foal will therefore be bred on a similar cross to four stakes winners - all sons of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) - headed by multiple Group 1-winning mare Atlantic Jewel.

Zabeel is generally considered to be one of the world’s best broodmares sires, with his daughters producing 129 stakes winners, headed by 31 Group 1 winners, including the aforementioned Atlantic Jewel.

Gabbedy said he was pleased to have secured the mare and said there was a lot of upside to the mare.

“Adrift is a glamour mare, who is by a champion broodmare sire in Zabeel and she had speed which not many by the stallion show,” said Gabbedy.

“Her yearling colt by Vinnie was a star and he has gone to a great stable. She is well mated to an exciting upcoming stallion prospect.”
