Playing God yearlings headline acts of Mungrup Stud dispersal
A pair of yearlings by Playing God (Blackfriars) took centre stage on the Magic Millions Mungrup Stud Complete Dispersal Online Sale on Tuesday, with a filly by the stud’s former resident sire coming out on top after being purchased by Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock for $110,000.
In June, partners Gray and Jan Williamson decided to sell all their bloodstock, with their stallions Playing God and I’m All The Talk (Stratum) sold to stand at Darling View Thoroughbreds.
The sale-topping filly was catalogued as Lot 50 and she is out of Listed winner Latoria (Oratorio), who is herself a half-sister to 2017 Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Sheidel (Holy Roman Emperor).
Further back the filly’s third dam is Fer Forge (Chest Mark) - the dam of Asian Beau Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Track Jester (Tenby).
Gabbedy said he was happy to be buying into a family he knows well and the filly will be raced by Robert and Sylvie Crabtree, who owned Sheidel.
“My good friend Des De Largie raced Latoria and I knew how talented she was so she followed her whole career,” said Gabbedy. “I ended up buying her half-sister Sheidel who raced with great success for Robert and Sylvie Crabtree in Victoria culminating in her win in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate.
“This is a great running pedigree that is always capable of throwing a top-liner. We love her sire Playing God and believe he is a serious stallion. This yearling filly will come to Victoria and head to the Crabtree’s Dorrington Farm and be raced by the same connections.
“Mungrup Stud have done a fantastic job over the years and have been one of WA’s best breeders. It will be sad to see the end of an era, but it gives me great pleasure to support them by buying this outstanding filly.”
Ascot-based trainer Neville Parnham purchased the next most expensive lot on the online sale, when parting with $100,000 for another filly by Playing God.
Catalogued as Lot 78, the filly is the second foal out of La Trice Classic (Gr 3, 1800m) winner Vampi Lass (Bletchley Park), who was also offered on the online dispersal and sold to Marina Investments for $70,000.
She is also from the family of Listed scorers Lock The Vault (Bletchley Park), Platoon (Playing God) and Sheenasaidgrey (Verglas).
At the close of trade on Tuesday, Magic Millions reported 155 lots sold for a total of $2,574,750 at an average of $16,611 and the median was $11,000.
