Kevin Ross Bloodstock pays 58,000gns for yearling

A filly by Darley stallion Profitable (Invincible Spirit) was the headline act of the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale on Monday after Kevin Ross Bloodstock parted with 58,000gns for the youngster. 

Catalogued as Lot 135 and offered by Derek Veitch’s Ringfort Stud the filly is out of winning King’s Best (Kingmambo) mare Sassy Girl, who has already produced five winners. 

Sassy Girl herself is one of ten winners out of Listed-placed Dancing Prize (Sadler’s Wells), making her a half-sister to Group 3-placed pair Firebet (Dubai Destination) and Seeking The Prize (Zafonic) and Listed-winning Special War (Warning) and Dilshaan’s Prize (Dilshaan). 

The filly’s third dam is Italian Group 3 winner Aim For The Top (Irish River) - the dam of Polar Bear (Polar Falcon), who won the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (Listed, 1800m) at Flemington and was also finished runner-up in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m). 

Later on in the afternoon, another yearling by the Darley Stud stallion proved popular after BBA Ireland paid Mimi Wadham and Violet Hesketh’s WH Bloodstock 40,000gns for a colt by the sire. 

Catalogued as Lot 166, the colt is out of French Listed winner Sushi Tuna (Halling), who has produced one winner. 

Profitable stood at Darley’s Kildangan base for a fee of €12,000 in 2020. 

Profitable’s barnmate and former shuttler Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) has made a storming start to his career as a stallion and he enjoyed a good result on Monday with Joe Foley shelling out 40,000gns for a filly by the stallion. 

Offered by Houghton Bloodstock and catalogued as Lot 93, the filly is out of winning Singspiel (In The Wings) mare Operettist.

Further back she is from the family of Group 3 winner Quarter Note (Danehill) and Listed-winning pair Quito (Machiavellian). 

Houghton Bloodstock’s Jim Scallan said he was happy to see the filly prove popular in the ring. 

“We actually raced the mare and she won for us at two,” said Scallan. “She has a very nice Bated Breath two-year-old in training now, who has been placed this year and I would expect him to win probably next time out. 

“The filly was always a very nice filly to do anything with from day one. Great temperament, beautiful mover, very good-looking filly.”

Houghton Bloodstock finished the sale as the leading vendor having sold nine lots for 161,000gns. 

Overall during the one day sale 203 lots sold for 2,341,350gns at an average of 11,533gns and median of 8,400gns. At the 2019 sale 167 lots sold for 1,356,850gns at an average of 10,684gns and median of 8,000gns.
