Magic Millions release the catalogues for their forthcoming National Weanling and Broodmare sales
The catalogues for the forthcoming Magic Millions National Broodmare and Weanling sales are now online and includes the 60 lot unreserved Shadwell Stud dispersal of their Australasian operation.
A total of 455 weanlings have been catalogued for the National Weanling Sale which will be held on May 20 - 21, while the National Broodmare Sale begins its three day run on May 25.
The National Broodmare Sale comprises 774 lots and the first day of the sale will feature champion New Zealand mare Melody Belle (Commands), Group 1 sprinters Bella Vella (Commands) and Tofane (Ocean Park), and 2019 New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) scorer Miss Sentimental (Reliable Man), among more than 63 black type fillies and mares.
Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch told Racing & Sports Bloodstock that he’s extremely pleased with the support from the vendors and he’s looking forward to the start of the sale.
“I’m incredibly proud of the team, they’ve put a lot of work in, off the back of the Shadwell dispersals, to the Weanling and Broodmare sales and we’ve been given great support with the best weanlings, broodmares and race fillies that will go to market again this year, which is fantastic,” Bowditch said.
“In saying that, the sale demands that sort of respect these days. It’s the premier sale of its kind in this part of the world and again this year the focus will be on it from breeders and buyers of weanlings, broodmares and race fillies from buyers and agents all over the world, so we’ve been looking forward to getting the catalogue out there and letting people peruse it.”
With some buyers still unable to attend the sale, Bowditch said that he believes the information that they will provide on each lot is in a better format than ever before.
“I think we are in a lot better space than we were in 12 months ago in terms of the transparency and the information that we’re able to provide our buyers from wherever they may well be,” he said.
“Obviously there will be people unable to attend under the circumstances so the information that we’ve provided over the last year will again be on offer at this sale and in a better format than ever before so we’re looking forward to speaking to our clients and ensuring that they’re given the best possible opportunity to participate in the market.”
Bowditch is hopeful that the strength seen in the yearling sale market will continue through to the breeding stock sales.
“The market down here this year has been sensational to be honest and you’d suspect that the breeders who’ve done very well at the sales will be looking to reinvest,” he said.
“Weanling pinhooking has been good this year and we’ve got a really good group of wenlings we’re incredibly pleased with the weanlings that we’ve been given to sell. You then look on to the race fillies and the Shadwell dispersal on the first day of the mares, it would be the highlight on any selling schedule in any year, let alone this year. I’ll wake up with plenty of excitement with the weeks leading into the sale this year.”
A total of 20 young stallions will be represented by members of their first crop at the sale, including the first southern hemisphere bred weanlings by Coolmore Stud shuttler Churchill (Galileo) and his unbeaten Triple Crown-winning barnmate Justify (Scat Daddy), while it will be the first time buyers will be able to secure weanlings from the first crop of of Yulong Stud-based Grunt (O’Reilly), Widden Stud’s Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) and Darley shuttler Harry Angel (Dark Angel).
The list of Group 1-winning sale graduates from the National Weanling Sale continues to grow with this year’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) the latest superstar to emerge from the sale.
“This is a really legitimate market. I think that breeders are putting weanlings into the sale so that they foresee buyers can go on and win great races on the racetrack,” said Bowditch.
“Weanlings in recent years that have gone through the sale and go on include Stay Inside, Pierro, Zoustar. These sort of horses are the best of their generations and they are being offered as weanlings so it’s not a sale just for the pinhooker but it’s a sale for the end user. This catalogue in particular will be evident of that and I think that any buyer who turns up will see that and we’re delighted with the weanlings that we’ve got to sell.”
