This spring Kia Ora Stud will enter the stallion market again when they welcome last year's Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) and Group 3 winner Prague (Redoute's Choice) on to their roster and on Wednesday at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale they were securing mares to support their new young stallions, headlined by Group 3 winner Moss Trip (Mossman) who they bought for $900,000.

Catalogued as Lot 936 and offered by Yarraman Park on behalf of Triple Crown Syndications in foal to Widden Stud-based sire Trapeze Artist (Snitzel), Moss Trip landed the 2018 edition of the James HB Carr Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m). The daughter of Mossman (Success Express) was purchased by Triple Crown Syndications with her former trainers Snowden Racing for $32,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in 2016.

"It's a really good avenue to be involved with," Triple Crown Syndication's Chris Ward said. "We've had Peggy Jean who's come through the Magic Millions Sales for $1 million at the end of her career and we had Secret Trail a few years ago (sell) for $700,000.

"As you can see if you take the right approach the results are there and Magic Millions do a great job in getting all the prospective buyers here on the ground so well – we're more than happy to keep coming back here.

"She's been an outstanding story and it's great for our syndicate of owners.

"She was a filly we picked up for about $32,000 back in the day and she had a great career winning over half a million in prize-money and now to come to the Magic Millions sale ring and cap it all off with a huge sale of $900,000 – as you can imagine we've got some pretty excited owners."

Moss Trip is out of the unraced Stratum (Redoute's Choice) mare Space Trip, who is herself a half-sister to Group 3 winner Triple Elegance (Mossman).

Further back the mare's third dam is Listed winner Hysterical (Wolverton) - the dam of fellow Listed winner Hy Fuju (Fuji Kiseki) - the dam of dual Group 1 winner and now Darley sire Kermadec (Teofilo).

Kia Ora Stud's Shane Wright told Racing & Sports Bloodstock the mare would now be covered by Farnan.

"She was a lovely type of mare, who had great ability on the track and we love Mossman as a broodmare sire as well. She is the perfect physical type for Farnan this year which is where she will go.

"She has a lovely pedigree as well - she has it all really, being a young mare as well and she is in foal to Trapeze Artist. She has a lovely physical appearance, lovely pedigree and she was good on the track and getting the three together is quite hard.

"With the market being as strong as it is, we believe she will end up looking well bought. We can never say $900,000 is cheap but we are very happy going forward."

Yarraman Park's Matt Scown told Racing & Sports Bloodstock the mare exceeded the farm's expectations in terms of what she would make in the ring.

"She really is a beautiful mare," he said. "When we got her as a race filly she was owned by Triple Crown racing, so their syndicate decided to experiment a bit and instead of putting her through the ring then, they put her in foal and then sold her here.

"When she came to us off the track she was a lovely filly, but she has let down into the most magnificent mare. She will make the most beautiful mare.

"She made a bit more than what we expected. You always want to go into a sale with a pretty conservative mind and then you are presently surprised when they sell for a lot more than you anticipated. We thought she would make $400,000-$500,000 and Triple Crown are great, because they put everything unreserved so everyone knows where they stand with her. It was a fantastic result."

Another mare destined for a date with Farnan is Moqueen (Uncle Mo) with Kia Ora buying her on Wednesday for $750,000 from the draft of Newhaven Park.

Catalogued as Lot 922, the daughter of Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) won the 2016 edition of the Dulcify Handicap (Listed, 1600m) and was offered in foal to Darley Stud-based sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill).

The mare's first two foals have been well received at public auction this year, with Ciaron Maher and David Eustace having purchased her first produce - a filly by Aquis Farm-based sire Invader (Snitzel) - now named Movader - for $190,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year, while Fernrigg Farm paid $250,000 for her colt by Fastnet Rock (Danehill) at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale last week.

Wright said Moqueen was the type of mare Kia Ora had set out to target to support their new stallion Farnan and the fact she was offered in foal to Exceed And Excel was a massive bonus.

"We worked hard on the catalogue to really target these sorts of mares who showed good ability on the track and these nice quality mares are the sorts of mares we want on the farm," said Wright.

"Of course you never try to get too ahead of yourself, but she is in foal to Exceed And Excel who is a brilliant stallion and hopefully she can throw a nice foal and that was definitely a bonus having that inside and she will also visit Farnan."

While Kia Ora are out souring mares to support their new stallions, they were also on the hunt to find horses that would also strengthen their broodmare band and one that fitted that profile perfectly was the unraced Snitzel (Redoute's Choice) mare Sweet Sister whom they secured for $750,000.

Catalogued as Lot 1072, the mare was offered in foal to Arrowfield Stud-based sire Dundeel (High Chaparral) and she has already proved herself a good broodmare, being the dam of Listed-winning filly Supreme Idea (I Am Invincible).

The mare herself is very well-related being out of Group 3-placed Flidais (Timber Country), making her a half-sister to Group 1 winner Sweet Idea (Snitzel), Listed scorer Rush (Charge Forward) and Group 2 scorer Showtime (Snitzel), who now stands at Arrowfield Stud.

Sweet Sister's third dam is dual Group 1 winner Electronic (First Norman) and Wright said that a mating for the mare will be decided in the coming weeks.

"She is an absolutely amazing type and I know she is named Sweet Sister, but she stands in her own right everyday on physical type," said Wright. "It is a beautiful pedigree and I believe Sweet Idea has gone up north I believe and she was covered by Galileo previously and there is a lot happening in the family.

"She is related to a Group 1 winner and Group 2-winning stallion and she is a relatively young mare who has already produced a stakes winner by I Am Invincible. There is so much upside to her at this stage of her life.

"The way the market has been we were quite happy to get her for that sort of money. She doesn't suit any of our stallions and a mating has not yet been decided, but it was just a very good page that we were interested in for our own Kia Ora broodmare band."
