Strong Trade On Day 2 At Tattersalls

3 minute read

The only yearling by the ill-fated George Washington attracted the most attention leading up to the second day of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, but it was a daughter of Pivotal and a son of Galileo that stole the show.

The second day saw a total of 169 lots sold for 19,271,000 guineas, at an average of 114,030 guineas and a median of 75,000 guineas, with trade stepping up a level from yesterday and with the figures comparing favourably with the corresponding session last year.

It was standing room only in the sale ring at Park Paddocks in the early evening as thoroughbred enthusiasts and the sales crowd gathered to watch the only yearling by the ill-fated GEORGE WASHINGTON go under the hammer.

Consigned from Gerry and Patricia Burke's Glidawn Stud, the daughter of the RAINBOW QUEST mare FLAWLESSLY is a half sister to the Group 3 winner OMBRE LEGERE and the Grade 1 placed FLAWLY, dam of BEST NAME, runner-up in the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club.

The filly was knocked down to bloodstock agent Ross Doyle for 320,000 guineas after he saw off the efforts of Charlie Gordon-Watson. Doyle indicated that the filly was purchased on behalf of Julie Wood, one of the principal owners in Richard Hannon's yard, and would go into training at their East Everleigh Stables in Wiltshire.

The PIVOTAL filly out of the Listed winning SADLER'S WELLS mare BRIOLETTE carried one of the best pedigree's in the Book 1 catalogue, with her dam a half-sister to Champion galloper PILSUDSKI as well as the Champion Japanese filly FINE MOTION and a further three Group/Listed winners. Consigned from David and Dianne Nagle's Barronstown Stud, the filly was knocked down to Shadwell Estates' Angus Gold for 650,000 guineas, the equal highest price for the day, after he saw off the efforts of agent Michael Goodbody.

The other lot to realise 650,000 guineas was the GALILEO colt out of the INDIAN RIDGE mare CAUMSHINAUN consigned from The Castlebridge Consignment. The own brother to the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas winner NIGHTIME saw interest from BBA Ireland's Eamonn Reilly as well as Coolmore principal John Magnier, but it was British businessman Sir Robert Ogden who prevailed.

The consignment from Egon Weinfeld's Meon Valley Stud is always a highlight of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and two yearlings descended from REPROCOLOR, one of the original Weinfeld mares caught the attention of buyers. The filly by DUBAWI out of the LAMTARRA mare BELLA LAMBADA has a pedigree littered with Group and Listed winners and was knocked down to John Ferguson for 460,000 guineas after a protracted duel with Luke Lillingston, stood alongside Lady Olivia Hoare.

A couple of hours later the MONTJEU colt out of HIGH TOP mare COLORSPIN was knocked down John Magnier for 550,000 guineas. The strapping colt is a sibling to the Group 1 winners KAYF TARA, OPERA HOUSE and ZEE ZEE TOP.

Late in the evening the CAPTAIN RIO half-sister to the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes winner ALFRED NOBEL captured the attention of some of the world's leading breeders. The filly, who was consigned by Seamus Burns' Lodge Park Stud, is a daughter of the DESERT PRINCE mare GLINTING DESERT and attracted interest from The Aga Khan Studs' Georges Rimaud, Shadwell Estates' Angus Gold as well as leading Irish trainer Jim Bolger and agent Peter Doyle, but the group were usurped by Cheveley Park Stud's Chris Richardson who secured the filly for 400,000 guineas.

The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continues at 10.30am on Thursday, October 8 .
