Australian Breds To The Fore In South Africa

3 minute read

Australian bred two year-old filly Dylan's Promise, a daughter of Dylan Thomas, has landed a Black Type success in the Listed Devon Air Stakes at Clairwood in South Africa.

The Charles Laird trained filly took out the 1450m event by half a length and has the overall record of two wins ad a placing from just three starts.

A $35,000 purchase for Heritage Bloodstock from the Erinvale Thoroughbreds draft at the 2011 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Dylan's Promise is the fourth winner from GI placed Rigoletto mare Madonna.

Madonna is the grand-dam of this season's smart three year-old filly Our Miss Jones, a recent second in the GI SAJC Australasian Oaks.

Dylan's Promise is the third Australian bred winner from the first Southern Hemisphere bred crop of foals by Dylan Thomas and is his third stakes-winner worldwide joining the ill-fated Furner's Green and Tannery.

A six-time GI winning son of Danehill, Dylan Thomas stands at Coolmore Australia this spring at a fee of $13,750.

An Australian-bred runner to earn G1 status in South Africa over the weekend was Not A Single Doubt's son Castlethorpe, running a fine second in G1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge at Clairwood.

Already a G3 winner, Castlethorpe began his current campaign in March, winning the Listed Fairview East Cape Sprint. He won again at Clairwood on May 13 before finishing sixth in the G1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint at Scottsville.

Castlethorpe's dam Park Heiress, a Sadler's Wells three-quarter-sister to champion European colt New Approach, was sold in foal to Not A Single Doubt by Bellerive Stud at the 2007 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for $38,000.

The buyer was Belmont Bloodstock, acting for breeder Frank Meduri. On his behalf Blue Gum Farm sold the resulting colt for $50,000 to South African trainer Mike Bass at the 2009 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale.

Castlethorpe is bred on the same cross as Not A Single Doubt's 2YO stakeswinner Single Spice (from a Galileo mare), his Group-placed 3YO son Spirited Eagle (from a Carnegie mare) and stakes-placed 2YO Dominant (from a Montjeu mare).

Not A Single Doubt's only other South African runner, the 2YO colt Lionize (ex Arthur's Lass by Unduplicated) was second in the Listed Gatecrasher Stakes at Clairwood on Saturday.

A $100,000 purchase from the 2011 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, he broke his maiden in April and was fourth in a G2 event at Scottsville last month.

With his WA-based son Cavallo Pazzo running third in the G3 Belmont Sprint at Ascot on Saturday Not A Single Doubt is now the sire of 24 stakes performers with 14 of them earning black type this season.
