Late comer Ruler Of The World, who did not make his racing debut until April, became the 15th classic winner sired by Galileo in the UK and Ireland when he carried the Coolmore colours to victory in the world’s most famous classic.

The last Derby winner who was unraced as a two-year-old was Commander In Chief in 1993.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Ruler Of The World becomes the 33rd G1 winner by Galileo, who was also responsible for the Derby third Galileo Rock and fourth Battle Of Marengo.

Second placed Libertarian is from the first crop of New Approach, the Derby-winning son of the all-conquering Galileo and sire of Friday’s Oaks winner Talent as well as 2000 Guineas winner Dawn Approach, the unplaced Derby favourite.

Galileo’s classic roll of honour, headed by the exceptional Frankel, could have another addition on Sunday when Intello attempts to secure a famous Derby double for the sire in the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) at Chantilly.

The Coolmore-owned Ruler Of The World was bred to be a classic winner as he is a half-brother to multiple G1 winner and sire Duke Of Marmalade, who counted the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes among his G1 wins.

Ruler Of The World’s pedigree comprises a mix of speed and stamina as his close relatives include champion sprinter Wolfhound as well as Belmont Stakes winners A.P. Indy and Lemon Drop Kid.

Ruler Of The World gave Aidan O'Brien his fourth Derby and a second for jockey Ryan Moore.

O'Brien’s previous Derby winners were Galileo (2001), High Chaparral (2002) and Camelot (2012) while Moore recorded his first win was on Workforce in 2010.

Ruler Of The World is the 17th Irish-trained winner of the Derby since 1780 and the third in succession owned by the Coolmore syndicate of Derrick Smith, Sue Magnier and Michael Tabor after their wins with Pour Moi (2011) and Camelot (2012).

They were represented by five runners, all by Galileo - Battle Of Marengo, Festive Cheer, Flying The Flag, Mars and Ruler Of The World – in this year’s Derby.
