New Zealand Bloodstock's 2011 National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale (2-4 May) is set to offer breeders an extensive selection of 297 broodmares that represent some of Australasia's leading families and bloodlines.
The Broodmare session - scheduled to commence from approximately 2pm on Tuesday 3 May - will offer breeders a range of quality breeding prospects, with many mares in foal to leading New Zealand stallions. And with the average priced broodmare selling for just $12,318 at the 2010 May Sale, the value the sale offers to prospective buyers is exceptional.
Amongst the most impressive in the line-up is Feelin' Pretty at Lot 595. Feelin' Pretty is by Thorn Park, a rapidly up-and-coming sire who has just broken the record for the highest progeny earnings in a New Zealand season.
Out of the winning Zabeel mare Monroe Magic, Feelin' Pretty is a half-sister to the Group 1 AJC Derby winner Headturner (Anabaa), this season's Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude and Group 1 Caulfield Guineas winner Anacheeva (Anabaa), and the Group 2 winner Kroner (Viking Ruler). And with Anacheeva running a brave third in the AJC Derby, and still an entire, the family's value is poised to increase.
Feelin' Pretty is already the dam of two foals, both by the in-form Savabeel, and has been served by one of New Zealand's leading sires in O'Reilly who is also having a strong season, courtesy of, amongst others, his history-making daughter Shamrocker. Feelin' Pretty will be offered by Dormello Stud (as agent).
With racing in Singapore rapidly on the rise, the performance there by New Zealand thoroughbreds has been significant. Mexican Rose (Volksraad) was a big part of this success, winning 10 times on the Singapore turf, including three times at Sgp-3 level.
Her dam Down View (Gone West) is amongst the entries at Lot 589. She is the dam of four named foals, all winners, including Mexican Rose, and has an unnamed colt by Stravinsky on the ground. She has been served by first season covering sire Mastercraftsman - himself a Champion 2YO Colt in Europe & Ireland - and will be offered by Trelawney Stud.
A broodmare in waiting, Glamorous Girl (Thorn Park) showed plenty of ability on the track, winning the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes at three, a well-contested leg of the prestigious NZB Filly of the Year Series. She is being sold as a racing and breeding prospect in the Sale's new Horses-in-Training session at Lot 399 by Seaton Park.
When looking at broodmare sires, Royal Academy rates very highly as the damsire of 86 stakes winners, including Group 1 winners Fastnet Rock and Heart of Dreams, and boasts combined progeny earnings through his daughters at stud of over $108 million world-wide.
Royal Academy has one entry in the Sale at Lot 428, the stakes placed mare Royal Ambition being offered by Raffles Farm. Boasting a prolific lineage of leading damsires, she is from the Group 1 placed Last Tycoon mare Ambitious, who is from the Group 3 winning Centaine mare Starcent, a daughter of the Group 2 winning Sir Tristram mare Star of the Knight.
Royal Ambition has been given every chance at stud and has produced two foals, both by the highly successful sire Danehill Dancer, and has been served by Mastercraftsman.
With a host of other leading broodmares in the 2011 May Sale catalogue, some other highly attractive broodmare prospects include:
• Lot 430, the Red Ransom mare Ruby Rouge from Pencarrow Stud, a half-sister to the Group 3 winner Zino Belle (Success Express) and a daughter of the Group 2 placed Christina Belle, the same family as Winning Belle (Zabeel) and Our Ella Belle (Encosta de Lago). She has been served by Road to Rock.
• Lot 443, the unraced Zabeel mare Secret Miss from Brighthill Farm, from Office Affair (Secretariat), a half-sister to the stakes winners Wander Kind (Hold your Peace), Lovin Lass (Cutlass) and the grand-dam of the US Group 3 winner Ashley's Kitty (Tale of the Cat). She has been served by Tavistock.
• Lot 445, the winning Danehill mare Sharise from Seaton Park, a half-sister to the dual Group 1 winner Shame (Scenic), the dam of the Group 3 winner Demerit (Lonhro) and Group 1 placed Evander (Octagonal). She has an unnamed foal and yearling both by Street Sense.
• Lot 496, the Jetball mare Vaguely Jet from Highden Park, the dam of the stakes placed Howbaddouneedit (Howbaddouwantit), she is a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Prized Gem (Prized), the dam of the Group 1 AJC Derby winner and sire Nom du Jeu (Montjeu). She has three unnamed colts by Ishiguru, Iffraaj and High Chaparral and has been served by Iffraaj.
• Lot 608, the Heroicity mare Gin City from Bradbury Park, a half-sister to the dual Group 1 winner Zarita (Pentire), the Group 2 winner Run Like The Wind (Pins) and the Dubai Group 3 winner Joy and Fun (Cullen). She has been served by Keeper.
• Lot 704, the Pentire mare Penticton from Trelawney Stud. A half-sister to the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes winner Sphenophyta (Groom Dancer), she is the dam of three foals, two by the first season sire Darci Brahma, and one by Pins, and has been served by Pins.
The Broodmare session will also be offering mares by such sires as Canny Lad, Kaapstad, Last Tycoon, Marscay, Star Way and Woodman, with mares having been served by Alamosa, Bachelor Duke, Darci Brahma, Elusive City, Pentire, Perfectly Ready, Savabeel, Swiss Ace, Tavistock, Thorn Park and many more.
