Talented Savabeel filly Saavoya completed successive stakes wins in the G2 New Zealand Bloodstock Royal Stakes at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day to take the lead in the NZB Filly of the Year series.
Trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman backed up the Saavoya after she won the fourth leg in the NZB Filly of the Year Series, the G2 Eight Carat Classic, on Boxing Day.
Craig Grylls continued his association with Saavoya, who made ground with ease before dashing to the front along with favourite Vavasour (Redoute’s Choice) making her bid on the outside. The pair stormed six lengths ahead of the field with Saavoya holding on to win by half a length.
Charmont (High Chaparral) ran a strong race to claim third place to complete a Karaka graduates trifecta.
“Saavoya will probably follow the Filly of the Year Series and will race in the next Waikato race in the Series and hopefully towards the Oaks,” Baker said.
Bred by Pukhraj Breeding and Racing and offered by Trelawney Stud at the 2013 Karaka select Sale, Saavoya was purchased by Rogerson Bloodstock for $NZ22,000.
She has had eight starts for three wins from her last four starts, increasing her winnings to $130,525 for owners Waimarama Partnership Syndicate.
Saavoya is out of the winning mare Royal Prize (Prized), a half-sister to Dancing Away (Danzatore), who was second in the G1 Karrakatta Plate.
With 16 points she leads the NZB Filly of the Year series from Platinum Witness (California Dane) with 12 points and Darci’s Dream (Darci Brahma) third with 7 points.
The next race in the NZB Filly of the Year Series is the G3 Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham on 24 January.
