Rip Van Winkle is well established as a black type sire in the Northern Hemisphere where his progeny include the G1 Phoenix Stakes winner Dick Whittington and G3 winner I Am Beautiful.

Magic Dancer was his first winner in Australasia when she won on debut in October for trainers Graeme and Debbie Rogerson and raced at Pukekura as an afterthought.

“She was a late nomination when there only half a dozen in there,” said Debbie Rogerson said.

“I had a look at the form and decided to have a go – she worked super during the week and I was quite confident.”

Magic Dancer accelerated on the turn and won the 1200m contest easing down by two and three quarter lengths.

Magic Dancer was a $90,000 NZB Karaka Select Sale purchase by the Rogersons.

She is a half-sister to G1 placed Manten and stakes-placed Perkins, being the sixth winner from the stakes-winning Desert Sun mare Dazzling Belle.

Rip Van Winkle was a triple G1 winner of the Juddmonte International, Sussex Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

He will command a fee of €25,000 at Coolmore Ireland this year after covering a full book of mares at Windsor Park Stud in New Zealand last year.
