Il Cavallo’s brief New Zealand racing career is over with Chequers Stud now looking to the future with the son of Choisir.

The entire was secured by brothers Mark Fraser-Campin and Chris Campin last spring.

Il Cavallo was narrowly beaten on debut in the Listed Pegasus Stakes at Riccarton before he was unplaced in the Gr.3 Concorde Handicap at Ellerslie.

“We’ve retired him – he was bought as a stallion and he’s got a beautiful temperament so we’re looking forward to it,” Fraser-Campin said.

“He’s an outstanding type of horse with a great pedigree.”

A half-bother to the Gr.1 1000 Guineas winner Amicus and a three-quarter-brother to the champion European and Australian sprinter and Group One producer Starspangledbanner, Il Cavallo won five races and was stakes placed from Peter Moody’s Caulfield stable.

Meanwhile, the quality mare Kisses is back in work to prepare for her autumn campaign.

“She’ll probably run fresh-up in the Westbury Classic and then maybe in the Cuddle Stakes before the Group One for fillies and mares at Te Aroha,” Fraser-Campin said.

A winner at Group Three and Listed level and a multiple stakes placegetter, Kisses won the first two starts of her last preparation and then finished sixth from a wide alley in the Gr.1 Thorndon Mile.

She struck rain-affected going when unplaced in the Gr.2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes and was spelled after finishing out of the money from a horror draw in the Gr.2 Cal Isuzu Stakes.

“Her first three runs last preparation were all good, but a wet track and the outside gate meant those last two were really wasted runs,” Fraser-Campin said. “She’s back now after a break and she looks great.”
