3 minute read

New Zealand’s Inglewood Stud savoured a memorable black type double for their resident first season sire Zacinto on Saturday.

The North Canterbury nursery celebrated with the Dansili stallion’s daughter Zigwig successful at Riccarton and his son Ugo Foscolo winning at Te Rapa for his first 2YO stakes winners.

Inglewood Stud is a family operation managed by Gus Wigley, who was handed the reins in 2012 by his father Nick who trains Zigwig.

“This is just huge for the stud and the stallion,” Nick Wigley said.

Zigwig (Zacinto x Wig by Snippetson) landed the Listed Champagne Stakes at Riccarton while Ugo Foscolo (Zacinto x Bequests by Stravinsky) took out the Listed Equine Stakes at Te Rapa in track record time for 1100m.

An impressive debut winner at Rotorua the previous month, the Stephen Marsh-trained colt was purchased at Karaka for $50,000.

• The 5YO gelding Pepper Mill (Patapan x Danska Mill by Danske) became the second stakes winner for his Stravinsky sire when he took out the Listed Easter Stakes at Riccarton.

This Listed 1100m juvenile event saw a track record broken, which had stood since 1994, by the still undefeated either on raceday or at the trials Ugo Foscolo. The pressure was on from the outset and Ugo Foscolo was jogging along fifth the outer before being asked to lengthen wider turning for home. The gelding took almost the length of the home straight to get up and win by a short neck to clock 1:03.54. This time broke the record of 1:03.80 set by Asahi in 1994 and that result proved meaningful with Stony Bay and Allegro second and third respectively. Asahi would win four races and be a G1 runner up as a juvenile and 3yo while Stony Bay would end up winning 13 races (two at G1) and Allegro would end up winning 9 races (three at G1). Ugo Foscolo has never tasted defeat and has put his sire Zacinto into the spotlight as a producer of young talent. Memories Only ran a brave second after disputing a solid pace throughout and only got run over the final 20m. Her attacker on the outer stopped and ran fifth beaten eleven and a half lengths. Barcelo was third over two lengths back after trailing on the inner. The gaps back to the rest were huge as exhaustion set in. Ugo Foscolo will be put aside now and come back in the Spring aimed at the G1 2000 Guineas (1600m). He is named after an Italian poet/writer and A Zacinto was a pre-Romantic sonnet he wrote so the owners of the gelding clearly googled the unusual but catchy name! If the top three home in this can even remotely achieve what the top three did in the former race record twenty-two years ago then there will some happy trainers, owners, riders and breeders.
