Outstanding three-year-old Tarzino is poised to add to the vintage year being enjoyed by iconic New Zealand breeder Sir Patrick Hogan.
Hogan is already the breeder or co-breeder of horses who have won five Group One races so far this season.
The horses concerned are Preferment (Zabeel x Better Alternative, by Flying Spur) and Tarzino (Tavistock x Zarzino by Zabeel).Preferment has won the G1 The BMW, G1 Australian Cup and g1 Turnbull Stakes while Tarzino has the G1 Victoria Derby and G1 Rosehill Guineas on the board and runs as a hot favourite in Saturday’s G1 ATC Australian Derby at Randwick.Hogan took great satisfaction in watching Preferment beat Who Shot Thebarman, an NZ-bred son of Yamanin Vital, in The BMW at Rosehill last Saturday.
"I shared in the breeding of the winner and also bred the sire of Who Shot Thebarman," he said.He also cheered home Leebaz (Zabeel x Polish Princess, by Polish Precendent) in the G3 Easter Cup at Caulfield last Saturday.
"It's wonderful to see Zabeel having such a great season as both a sire and broodmare sire," he said. The focus is now on Cambridge Stud's young gun sire Tavistock after he sired another three winners - all from his first crop - over the Easter weekend.
Nymph Monte (Tavistock x Grove Nymph,by Grosvenor) won the Masterton Cup at Tauherenikau. The other winners for Tavistock over the long weekend were Galaxy Miss (Tavistock x Kiss In Vain by Vain) and Longchamp (Tavistock x Shot at the Title by Danehill).Tavistock has rocketed to the position of being not only New Zealand's hottest young stallion and is now squarely on the radar for Australian breeders.
His Rosehill Guineas/Hong Kong Derby double with Tarzino and Werther was a massive result for a sire with only three crops of racing age.Tarzino and Werther are both from Zabeel mares, underlining how this mating cross wil be a huge asset for New Zealand breeding.
Tarzino has now had nine starts for four wins and three placings while the 4YO Werther (Tavistock x Bagalollies by Zabeel) has raced 17 times for seven wins and eight placings including his second placings in the South Australian Derby and Queensland Derby before he left for Hong Kong.Werther is a brother to Gobstopper, a winner in New Zealand this season at 2050m. They are the first two runners from Bagalollies, a winning Zabeel mare from Lady’s Night (Ascot Knight).
Tavistock is also the sire of Saturday’s G1 Doncaster Mile runner and triple G1 winner Volkstok’n’barrell, who narrowly defeated Preferment in last year’s Rosehill Guineas, and Imperial Lass, another product of a Zabeel mare who finished third behind Winx in last year’s G1 Queensland Oaks.Tavistock is by the Sadler’s Wells French Derby, Irish Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomph winner Montjeu from Upstage, an unplaced mare by English Derby winner Quest For Fame
Tavistock himself was at his best at 1400m. Named champion New Zealand Sprinter for 2009-10, he ran 18 times for six wins incloudign two G1 wins in New Zealand and the G2 Blamey Stakes at Flemington.
