Pierro gelding Regal Power emulated his older brother Action when he won Saturday’s $400,000 WATC Derby at Ascot, continuing the dominance of the Perth classic by leading owner-breeders Bob and Sandra Peters.
The Peters-owned and bred Action won the WATC Derby 12 months ago while Regal Power is their eighth winner of the G2 event since 2000.
Their great winning record in the race began with Old Money in 2000 followed by Dreamaway (2011), Mystic Prince (2013), Respondent (2014), Delicacy (2015), Arcadia Dream (2016) and Action (2018).Champion Perth jockey William Pike won the Derby for a record eighth time that includes six wins for the Peters while Grant Williams, who trains Regal Power in partnership with his wife Alana, eclipsed JJ Kelly’s training record with his seventh Derby victory.
Regal Power (Pierro x Broadway Belle by Redoute’s Choice) is one of 16 stakes winners by the Coolmore stallion Pierro. His dam Broadway Belle, a daughter of the G1 placed mare Antique (Metal Storm), won five times and has produced two other winners while her current Vancouver yearling was passed in at $500,000 at last week’s Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney.
She also has a weanling filly by American Pharoah and was again bred to Pierro in 2018.The massive Peters team has enjoyed an exceptional season in Perth where their runners have won the G1 Railway Stakes, G1 Kingston Town Classic, G2 Perth Cup, G2 WA Guineas, G3 WA Oaks and G3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes.
