The 9YO marvel Rock Magic has returned after a 12-month break necessitated by injury to claim his ninth stakes victory at Northam in Western Australia in yet another reminder of the enormity of the loss of his champion Redoute’s Choice.
It’s only been six weeks since the sudden death of Redoute’s Choice but his global influence will last for years.
Since his death on March 26 his record has increased by three stakeswinners with Dark Choice winning the G3 WA Oaks in Perth, Danceteria taking a Listed win in France and the Haras du Mezeray-bred Enbihaar winning the Listed Daisy Warwick Fillies Stakes at Goodwood in the UK for Sheikh Hamdan. The run continued when Rock Magic (Redoute’s Choice x Rockabubble) won the G3 Northam Stakes on Sunday.
The Chris Gangemi-trained Rock Magic was already one of Redoute’s Choice’s 17 million-dollar earners with Sunday’s win taking his earnings close to $1.4 million from 16 wins and 12 placings from 49 starts across 7 seasons. He was bred by the Arrowfield and Planette Thoroughbreds, the same partnership behind the breeding of Saturday’s Gold Coast 2YO stakeswinner Stronger.
Rock Magic is the second of three foals left by the New Zealand G1 winner Rockabubble, who is now in retirement as a nanny mare at Arrowfield Stud.He was passed in at the 2011 Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney and had wore the Arrowfield silks for his first four wins in 2013 when trained by Paul Messara in NSW.
After his first 11 starts Rock Magic was sold as a 4YO to Gangemi Thoroughbreds which races him with a large group of stable clients. Redoute’s Choice now has 11 winners of 17 stakes races worldwide for the 2018/19 season, most notably his spectacular 3YO son The Autumn Sun.The 5-time G1 winner has retired with prizemoney of $3.4 million and joins the Arrowfield roster for the upcoming breeding season alongside Snitzel, Not A Single Doubt, Scissor Kick and Pariah, sires that ensure Redoute’s Choice continues to figure in stakes-winning pedigrees for many years.
Daughters of Redoute’s Choice have also added eight Group and Listed wins to his record as a dam sire since March 26 and has a strong chance of winning his first Australian Broodmare Sires’ title with 19 stakeswinners and $18.1 million prizemoney giving him the current lead.A number of Redoute’s Choice mares and progeny from his 2017 and 2018 crops are on offer at the coming NZB Karaka May Sale and the Magic Millions National Weanling & Yearling Sale.
