Racing and Sports finds the best-backed runners in early betting on Saturday’s meeting at Moonee Valley.

Sweet Sherry (Race 3) opened at each way odds but has taken over at the head of the market at $3.50 having formed a point a and a half. She has been freshened since her last start stakes placing and won her previous run when resuming at this course and distance.

Lady Le Fay (Race 5) is on the verge of an odds on quote at $2.05 having opened at $2.70 earlier in the week. The mare should be peaking third up and put the writing on the wall last start when second in a stakes race in Sydney.

Gallante (Race 8) was the Sydney Cup winner last autumn so will appreciated the step up in trip today and has one of the best form lines of the spring when second to subsequent Caulfield Cup winner Jameka when resuming in the Naturalism Stakes. Punters have latched on to that fact and have backed Gallante into clear favouritism at $3.

Grand Marshal scored his first win in 16 starts since taking out the 2015 Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). He settled back in third last place in the ten-horse field before improving (wide out) from the 700m, after being suited by a strong mid-race pace. He challenged on straightening and proved too good in the closing stages to win well in a race that developed into a solid staying test. His stablemate Who Shot Thebarman raced in fifth place, one off the rails before commencing a move (wide) from the 800m. He hit the front (still wide) at the home turn and then battled strongly for second. The $61 chance Pentathlon raced in second last place in the ten-horse field, got between runners approaching the home turn and went to fourth at the home turn. He then battled on well to take the minor placing. The favourite Gallante went to the front but was pressured mid-race (by Authoritarian) and weakened from the home turn to finish seventh.
