The Money Trail – Moonee Valley, February 17

3 minute read

Racing and Sports finds the best-backed runners in early betting on Friday’s meeting at Moonee Valley.

Scudtime (Race 1) could be worth an each way ticket at $6 having firmed three points since betting commenced. The Smart Missile colt is on debut and while he was a fair way off them in his trial he is expected to show more on race day.

Leodoro (Race 2) has firmed firmed more than a point to $4.60 and at that quote is challenging the second pick in the market. He is racing well with two wins and a placing so far this campaign including a last start victory at Sandown.

Sweet Melody (Race 6) still offers each way value at $5 after firming two-and-a-half points since market opened. She has been racing consistently this campaign including a last start Sandown win over 2400m.

Caprese (Race 7) opened at double figure odds but has firfirmed four points in early betting to $7.50. He resumes off some good form last campaign and has raced well fresh before.

The recent Hobart Guineas (Listed, 2100m) and Tasmanian Derby (Listed, 2200m) winner Northwest Passage took his record to five wins from six starts in another solid staying effort in winning well here, this time against older opposition. He soon went to the front, settled really well, was challenged nearing the home turn and briefly looked beaten on straightening but he lifted well and drew away over the closing stages for a very good win, running the 2500m out strongly. The top weight (58kg) Chance To Dance had a good trip in fourth place, one out and one back, appeared the likely winner when he loomed at the home turn but found the winner (whom he conceded 4kg) too good over the latter stages to take a good second. Dandy Gent had a nice run in third place on the rails from his inside barrier (1), got clear running on the inner in the straight and then battled on to just hold the minor placing.
