3 minute read

Racing and Sports finds the best-backed runners in early betting on Saturday’s meeting at Randwick.

Scarlet Rain (Race 3) opened as joint favourite but now stands alone at the head of the market at $3.20. She has excellent statistics at the course and distance, will be fit third up and won her only run on a heavy track.

Redzel (Race 6) is challenging for favouritism at $3.80 having firmed 60 cents since betting commenced. He won a stakes race at the Melbourne Cup carnival over this distance at his last start beating Lightning Stakes winner Terravista and his first up and wet track credentials are encouraging.

Chaquinta (Race 8) has been a long-priced move at $21, having shortened a massive fifty points. The mare was placed first up in a Country Championships heat and loves a wet track, unbeaten in three soft track runs and has two wins and two seconds from six starts on the heavy.

English put up very good first up effort in winning here. She settled back in second last place in the nine-horse field, improved along the rails from the 600m, put in a good run in the centre of the track on straightening (as most of the runners headed toward to outer rail). She hit the front at the 200m and then dug deep when challenged to score a narrow but very game win. She looks set for a really good preparation. Redzel showed his customary pace and soon overcame his outside barrier (9) to race share the lead (three deep). He challenged strongly (near the outside rail) at the 200m and kept battling on for a close second in a bold, first up run. The Victorian sprinter Supido settled in seventh place, wide with cover, went deep on turning for home and kept running on well along the outside rail for a good third.
