The Money Trail – Warwick Farm, April 12

3 minute read

Racing and Sports finds the best-backed runners in early betting on Wednesday’s meeting at Warwick Farm.

Argemone (Race 1) has tightened her grip on favouritism at $3.10 having firmed the best part of a point since markets opened. The Lonhro filly made a promising debut when second to the talented Condor Heroes at this course and should be improved by the experience.

California Archer (Race 2) has halved his opening price to $2 and at that quote is now a dominant favourite. He impressed when leading throughout to win his maiden on debut at the provincials and the punters are sticking with him to take the next step up.

Istria (Race 3) opened well into each way odds but good support has seen her firm more than three points to $4.40. The filly failed last time but had won her previous start in good style and could bounce back stepping up to the mile.

Denzil (Race 4) has taken over as the favourite at $3.30 having shortened more than a point. He is racing consistently with two wins and two seconds from his past four starts and the punters believe he can take the step up to city racing.

Sovereignaire (Race 7) has been a go at longer odds could be worth an each way ticket at $7 having firmed the best part of 20 points. He made some ground to finish midfield in a Provincial Championships qualifier when resuming and the market push suggests big improvement is expected second up.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained gelding California Archer is now unbeaten in two starts, following his good debut win in a 3YO Maiden (1200m) at Newcastle on 25 March with a narrow but sound win here. He began well and soon went to the front. He then steadied the pace, was challenged rounding the home turn but kept fighting back gamely to score in a photo finish. The Joe Pride-trained filly Lady Dane settled outside the eventual winner (California Archer), pressured that runner approaching the home turn, raced a bit greenly in stages in the straight but fought really well for a close second.
