The Money Trail – Doomben, May 13

3 minute read

Racing and Sports finds the best-backed runners in early betting on Saturday’s meeting at Doomben.

Invincible Express (Race 1) has closed the gap on the favourite at $3.60 having firmed a point. The mare is one a five-race winning streak and while she steps up in grade the money suggests she can keep the run going.

Punta Norte (Race 3) has almost halved his opening price, well-backed into $4.20 with TopBetta fixed odds. The gelding was a big improver second up when winning at Eagle Farm and could progress again.

Stampede (Race 6) has tightened his grip on favouritism at $2.70, almost a point shorter than his initial price. The lightly-raced gelding showed what he was capable of when winning the Wagga Cup last start and the punters are backing him to do it again.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Stampede followed his win in the recent Wagga Wagga Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) with another good front-running win here. He came across steadily from his wide barrier (12) to cross to the lead shortly after passing the winning post for the first time. His rider Kerrin McEvoy lifted the tempo nearing the 600m and Stampede then kept fighting back gamely for a really good win. The Mick Price-trained The Chairman was a handy third before putting pressure on the leader coming to the home turn and continued to battle gamely for a good second, just finding the winner (whom conceded him 2kg) too good. The New Zealand-trained Chocante raced in fourth place, went to third at the home turn and held on well to take the minor placing in a sound effort at his first Australian start.
