It would take an extremely brave person to write off Bulletproof Boy as he heads towards the Sportsbet A.G. Hunter Cup.
The Scott Ewen-trained gelding wowed crowds and defied odds to chase down the $1.50 favourite Tact Mcleod in the shadows of the post in Saturday night's Group 2 Bendigo Pacing Cup.
"I thought he was going to run second especially when the leader had such a good lead on him and he just found – he is a freak," Ewen said.
Ewen, 55, puts the form resurgence down to an aging grace and experience.
"He has gotten tougher with age, he is like a footballer who get better through the grades and steps up and he will run through and get better and that is what he has always done," he said.
"He is running the races of his life at the moment and he has got a bit of Tony Modra in him."
The Cranbourne trainer will head to Ballarat on January 18, before booking a date with destiny for the Sportsbet A G Hunter Cup on February 1.
"We are going to the Ballarat Cup in a fortnight and the Hunter Cup a fortnight after that," he said.
"A lot of the Hunter Cup horses will head to Ballarat and then I will take it fortnight by fortnight after that.
"He is just going as good as he has ever gone and he has never been in a Hunter Cup so this is his year to have a crack."
Ewen has continued to see strong progress on the training track from the winner of 45 races from 203 starts.
"He has always been a sensational track worker and he just loves to run," he said.
"He is a typical old horse – he has got the eye of the tiger at the moment and he has just gotten better with age and is getting stronger."
