Joao Moreira equalled Douglas Whyte’s all-time Hong Kong record of 114 wins in a season thanks to a treble at Happy Valley on Wednesday 13 May.
The Brazilian will now head into Saturday’s Sha Tin fixture (16 May) with the outright record almost in his grasp.
“I always admire Douglas (Whyte) very much, he’s definitely an outstanding jockey, and what he has done here is amazing. To equal his record is really special, and I am very happy I have done it,” said the jockey race fans call “Magic Man”.
“I put on target now which is one winner per race meeting which would be another 17 winners, and I will try my best to achieve this,” Moreira added.
Last month Moreira took another Whyte record as he streaked to the fastest century in Hong Kong history, and, alongside six-time century-maker Whyte and last season’s Champion Jockey Zac Purton, he is only the third jockey ever to notch 100 wins in a season. With 17 race meetings remaining before the season concludes on Sunday, 12 July, the premiership leader could extend his tally to a monstrous new record.
Moreira, a four-time Champion Jockey in Singapore before relocating to Hong Kong in October, 2013, opened his night’s account in race 1 aboard Forgive And Forget. He followed up on Foodie in race 3 and matched Whyte’s record when victorious on Trendiful in race 4.
