Silver Eclipse has a long way to go to match the Group One performances of a former stable star, but she has drawn a favourable early comparison.
"She reminds me a lot of Guiseppina the way she looks and the way she can let go,” co-trainer Steven Ramsay said.
Guiseppina enjoyed her finest racing moment when she won the 2012 Telegraph Handicap at Trentham and Silver Eclipse also turned in a top effort on the capital’s track on Saturday when she lowered the colours of the star colt Cauthen.
In the hands of Leith Innes, the Sir Peter Vela-bred and owned three-year-old proved a shade too strong for the hot-pot with a narrow victory in the Mitsubishi Electric Premier 1200.
“The favourite did a fair bit of work and to his credit he came back at us, but she’s good this filly and hopefully they’ll keep her to sprint races,” Innes said.
Prepared by Ramsay and Julia Ritchie, Silver Eclipse was unbeaten in her first two appearances before she finished fifth behind Rising Romance in the Listed Trevor Eagle Memorial at Ellerslie at the end of November.
“She had the two over 1200 and then we stepped her up pretty quickly to 1500 and she was wide and did a bit of work and they bombed her late,” Ramsay said.
Silver Eclipse didn’t have all favours on Saturday, but she was able to overcome a troubled run and produce a dogged finish.
“She got a buffeting across the top and she’s still green so it was a really good effort,” Ramsay said. “She’s beaten a good one so fingers crossed for her.”
