David Haworth’s promising family act of Tainui and Waikaha are in the right condition to strike further winning blows at Trentham on Saturday.
The Foxton trainer prepares the brother and sister for long-time stable clients Christopher and Susanna Grace, who also bred the Towkay-sired pair out of their Generous mare Harinui.
“I knew they were pretty good before they both stepped out and it’s just really a question of how far they can go,” Haworth said.
“I think he (Tainui) is the better of the two, but you couldn’t have asked for any more of them so far. They both won their last starts in good times and their efforts were outstanding.”
Tainui returns to Trentham for the Rating 85 www.richardsonracing.co.nz Premier after winning on debut on the course in January. He finished runner-up at Wanganui before his last-start success at Hawke’s Bay.
The four-year-old Waikaha is unbeaten in her two appearances after wins also at Wellington and Hastings and she will face a steep rise in class when she tackles the Gr.3 Hiremaster Cuddle Stakes.
The stable’s other runner is Rating 85 Direct Fish & Oysters Premier contender Holy Smoke, who is on a final warning.
“You probably won’t see him again if he doesn’t win or run second,” Haworth said. “He’s been working well and he has to do something.”
