Logan to bolster stable at RTR Sale

Ruakaka trainer Donna Logan will be on the lookout at this week’s NZB Ready to Run Sale for replacements following the stable departures of two well-performed representatives.

The Gerry Harvey-bred and owned Telepathic, a multiple winner and Group Three placed from 11 starts, has joined Chris Waller’s stable while the promising Copy Watch will also continue his career overseas.

“They’ve decided to keep Telepathic in Sydney,” Logan said.

Copy Watch won his first two starts as a juvenile and finished runner-up in the Listed Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes before transferring to Hong Kong.

McDonald taking on the world

Star New Zealand jockey James McDonald is Oceania’s representative in the World Super Jockeys’ series in Japan later this month.

He will compete against an outstanding international line-up in the two-day series, which takes in four races on November 29 and 30. The winner will receive more than $35,000.

McDonald will pit his riding skills against Australian jockey Zac Purton who will represent Asia, Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Ryan Moore (UK), Christophe Soumillon (France), Richard Hughes (UK), Patrick Smullen (Ireland), Arnoldus de Vries (Germany) and Luis Contreras (USA).

Eight local jockeys will also take part in the series with rides to be randomly chosen.

Freedman back in training role

Lee Freedman is joining his brother Anthony in a new training partnership at Flemington.

For the last six months, he has been the Director of Racing of Sir Peter Vela’s New Zealand racing operation and will be continuing as a consultant.

In 2011, Hall of Famer Freedman handed the head training role at the Markdel operation to his brother, who subsequently moved to Flemington.

“I’m very excited to be getting back into training,” he said. “I’ve spent the best part of three years reorganising my life. I’ve missed the horses, the people and the great mornings and have unfinished business in the industry.”

Freedman has won seven Melbourne trainers’ premierships and is third on the all-time Group One winners’ list with 124.

Peach of a run from filly

Promising youngster Peach Cove has exceeded expectations early in her career.

Fourth on debut, she finished a solid second behind the more experienced Jacquetta last time out in the Listed Welcome Stakes at Riccarton.

“She’s not really a two-year-old type and we think she’s going to train on and be a really nice filly,” co-trainer Mandy Brown said.

“It’s not necessarily about the next win with a horse like this, it’s about getting black type for her breeding career later on.”
