Miss Pelear hit a rich vein of form two years ago and her connections are hoping history is about to repeat itself.
The Mr Nancho mare recorded the fourth win of her career in November, 2012 when she beat Barbaric in a Rating 75 event at Te Rapa and next time out finished runner-up in the Gr.2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Te Aroha.
She was then a close eighth in the Gr.2 Cal Isuzu Stakes before she claimed the Gr.3 Rich Hill Mile and finished third, despite losing two shoes, in the Gr.1 Thorndon Handicap.Pickings have been slim for Miss Pelear since then, but more recent efforts have boosted the confidence of her trainers Keith and Brendon Hawtin for a return to the glory days.
The six-year-old was a fast-finishing second to Flower Bomb when resuming at Tauranga and she worked home strongly for fifth in the Breeders’ Stakes under Matt Cameron.“The first thing Matt said was that he wanted to ride her in the fillies and mares’ race at Te Rapa (the Cal Isuzu), but I think Abidewithme might be going there so he’ll be committed to her,” Brendon Hawtin said.
“She got back at Avondale the other day and her best work was in the last 100 metres. The beauty of the run was she’s pulled up great and as good as she went into it – she looks like she’s back on track again.“Her feet are the best they’ve been for 18 months, it’s taken a long time to get them right.”
Miss Pelear will now follow a familiar route into the Cal Isuzu at Te Rapa on December 13 and on to the Rich Hill at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.“All going well we’ll be back at Trentham for the Thorndon on January 24,” Hawtin said.
