Flying filly delights Spratt

3 minute read

Deceptive filly Shees Flawless gave Sam Spratt a high speed thrill at Te Rapa that turned back the clock to the jockey’s glory days as the regular partner of a dual New Zealand Horse of the Year.

The strapping chestnut produced a sizzling display to run her rivals into submission in Saturday’s Gr.3 Inglis Sales Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes.

Such was the electric display of front-running, that Spratt was moved to say she hadn’t felt that sort of power since combining with the multiple Group One winner Mufhasa.

“That was pretty impressive and I didn’t have a clue that she was going so quickly,” she said.

“She’s so big and strong and the main thing with her is to just get her to settle in the running.”

Shees Flawless, who had won her previous two starts in Spratt’s hands, revelled in her work at the head of the field and when she slipped clear at the top of the straight the chasers had no answer.

She had two and a half lengths to spare at the post and cut out the 1200 metres on a dead track in a slick 1.08.89.

Shees Flawless is trained by Roger James, who was at the Gold Coast with his stable star Silent Achiever, for a syndicate that includes co-breeder and part-owner Peter Walker.

“She’s got a great cruising speed,” he said. “She’s out of a Fastnet Rock mare and that’s where the strength comes from.”

Walker also shared in the ownership of Shees Flawless’ Group One winning sire Fully Fledged, whose career at stud has waned.

“I had to let the stallion go – nobody wanted to stand him,” he said.

Like the Trentham winner Hover, Shees Flawless was the subject of a $50,000 win bet and her supporter had no concerns with a comprehensive defeat of her stablemate Tavy with Passing Shot third ahead of Perfect Fit.

Breeders Stakes (G3)

The winner Sheez Flawless never gave anything else a look in taking the front early and running her rivals ragged to capture the G3 3yo event. It was her fourth win from ten starts and the 3yo filly clocked a slick 1:08.89 on a day of fast times but this was the quickest. As a comparison the Open Handicap sprint was run and won in 1:09.28 or two and a half lengths slower. Sheez Flawless has certainly come good this autumn and has now broken 1:10 in her last three wins in a row so expect her to be set for the big sprints next season. The stablemate of the winner Tavy came with a huge finish for second from well back and her future indeed looks very rosy. Passing Shot got over handy the outer from a wide gate and fought on for third but was almost four lengths from the winner at the line. Perfect Fit ran on okay and has more wins in store while they simply went too fast for the likes of Star O’Fraaj and Niki Piki Milo that race close the outer or handy the inner. Signify was sound after sitting back and wide and he lost no admirers with the South Islander far from disgraced once all things are factored in. Harbour Star did okay while Taken The Liberty is a wet tracker. A total forgive run is Mighty Maverick and he has some scope too so can be a black booker. The winner Sheez Flawless can go fast in front and sustain it plus as she showed today she can kick off a hot clip and it is at this point her rivals really feel the burn in the muscles and lungs. Fillies formed the quinella and as well filled the four, five and six holes at the line.
