Matamata trainer Glen Old was temporarily lost for words after watching stable representative Eletist produce a phenomenal performance to register a victory at Tauranga on Saturday.
Sent out favourite in the Gilmours Tauranga 3YO (1400m), Eletist was forced to sit three and four wide for the entire journey before grinding his way to the lead inside the final 100 metres to secure the win.
“Unbelievable really wasn’t it,” were the first words uttered by Old when interviewed immediately after the race.“I thought he would be up with the leaders but he ended up three and four deep the trip. I thought he had no hope from there but he just kicked on like a good horse.”
The gelding had created a big impression with a debut victory in August last year before contesting the Listed Wanganui Guineas where he finished seventh before being put aside for a spell. After finishing second to El Roca at the Te Teko trials in April the son of Librettist was 6th when resuming at Rotorua before hinting a win was close at hand when narrowly beaten at Ellerslie last month.“He’s always shown us a bit and it was nice for him to repay our faith today,” said Old.
“On that performance he will definitely get up to a mile as he really hit the line hard.”Old was also pleased to get the win for part owner Rob Lund who was sick at home and couldn’t be on course to witness the victory.
