Connors can lift sights with Tyne Cot

3 minute read

Tyne Cot acquitted himself well in his only appearance at the top level and trainer Neil Connors is hoping for another Group One chance with his injury-plagued galloper.

“That might be flying a bit high, but we’ll be trying,” said the Dannevirke horseman, who races the gelding with his wife Erin.

Tyne Cot won the Listed Team Wealleans Matamata Cup on Saturday in only his ninth appearance since he finished fourth in the Gr.1 Easter Handicap in 2013.

“He’s had his problems and when he’s right he’s quite good,” a reserved Connors said.

Also a winner on the opening day of the Hawke’s Bay carnival, Tyne Cot jumped from the inside gate at Matamata and rider Sam Spratt made good use of the draw.

“I didn’t want to be too far off them,” she said. “He settled nicely and he did everything right.”

Last-start Listed Westbury Classic winner Kindaleica set up a strong gallop and Spratt was able to angle off the fence across the top and Tyne Cot let down strongly in the straight.

“I got a nice drag into the race and he won really well. When he hit the front he wanted to pull up a bit.”

Tyne Cot’s sustained finish got him home by a long head from a courageous Kindaleica with Vincent Street taking third money ahead of Noble Warrior.

Meanwhile, Eletist added another string to his bow when he handled a firmer track to down Statham in the Russell & Yvonne Green Memorial.

“It was a good effort because he pulled quite hard and the pace was on,” rider Leith Innes said.

“He was coming back to 1200 metres and I thought it may have been a bit short, but he really hit the line.”

Trained by Glenn Old, Eletist has fashioned a tidy record with five wins from his 10 starts.

The Listed mile was run at a solid clip and saw the first two at the line well superior to the rest. Tyne Cot got a soft run the fence then eased off and was poised fourth turning for home before taking the length of the home straight to get up and score by a head in 1:34.36. It was the sixth win by the now 7yo visitor from just seventeen starts so he has had some issues over the years. This was his first stakes win or placing ever surprisingly today but the ability has always been there as a fourth in the G1 Easter Handicap of 2013 showed when beaten a length. Kindaleica was very brave in defeat and probably should have won all things being fair if pace-wise rated a tad more conservatively. He was wide in the lead for the first 600m before taking the front and being let run along only to be nabbed late. Vincent Street fought well for third albeit distant after being in or near the lead most of the way. Noble Warrior boxed on as he can in solidly run races for fourth while Classocoroc had that position sewn up until the post but for multiples bettors got pipped. Candle In The Wind ran on well late and looked a next upper only to find out she was lame in the off-fore leg. The next four home battled on okay with The Tidy Express the obvious improver of the quartet. The last four home saw three of them show no dash whatsoever and the other Dragonkeeper, stopped badly after sitting handy the outer. The overall time was four and a half lengths superior to any other mile event held on the day. Tyne Cot would have a better record with less health issues and did look well weighted in this and drawn, so the victory was expected. He won from the ace gate two runs prior so does like to sit then pounce. Kindaleica was super and has come a long way this season as fully mature and seems to be able to manage a broader range of track conditions now too. The improver next time out is The Tidy Express while her stablemate Delago’s Secret will not go as poorly next time out. Both are building up towards late spring and summer feature race targets.
