Hayes’ star shining again

3 minute read

David Hayes put a series of frustrations behind him on Saturday when his star performer Weregoingtogetcha returned to his best form.

The Awapuni trainer has endured a trying 12 months with the five-year-old, but all was forgotten after the entire charged away with the Gr.3 Hotel Coachman Manawatu Cup on his home track.

“He’s had his share of problems, but it’s all settled down now and he’s getting on with the job,” Hayes said.

Weregoingtogetcha finished runner-up in the Gr.1 Zabeel Classic nearly 12 months ago, but after Ellerslie he was laid low by a bout of colic and dehydration.

Hayes then had a horror spring with the entire’s Triple Crown prospects bogged down by wet tracks and a viral complaint.

Weregoingtogetcha showed he was on the way back with a solid third three runs back and he then ran fifth in the cup prelude.

“He’s doing everything right now, but we did have a few problems with his teeth and that’s why he was hanging,” Hayes said.

Ridden on Saturday by Mark Du Plessis, who was aboard in the Zabeel, Weregoingtogetcha settled midfield on the fence.

“We got shuffled back a bit further than I wanted, but we got the split at the top of the straight and he won well,” Du Plessis said.

“I said all week that if he brought his Zabeel form then he would be hard to handle. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him win a Group One.”

Weregoingtogetcha, who will now be readied for the Wellington Cup carnival, finished too well for King Kamada and Sampson took third money. The topweight Authentic Paddy boxed on well for fourth ahead of the northern mare Salford Art.

Manawatu Cup (G3)

WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

The two best-weighted runners in this G3 2300m handicap provided the quinella with Weregoingtogetcha easily beating Kink Kamada. The pair had at their last starts finished fifth and fourth respectively and both dropped a staggering 5.5kg today. Weregoingtogetcha got back on the inner and was there until across the top when able to worked off and turning for home steered a middle path and with plenty to offer. The 5yo Australian bred unleashed a withering surge to sweep past his rivals inside the final 100m to score by two lengths in 2:21.66. It was his fifth win in twenty-three starts and for rider Mark Du Plessis his sixth time atop for now two wins and two placings (one of those at G1 under WFA). He did not have to beg the entire to let go the run home and despite laying in it was a matter of keeping him on as even a keel as possible. King Kamada got back then improved wide rapidly across the top to be a looming sixth turning for home deep out. He kept coming well to get second but could not match the leg speed of the winner over the final stages. Sampson ran a brave third after being wide and working then second the outer midrace before challenging from the across the top thereafter. He and the eventual fourth finisher Authentic Paddy (leader under 61kg) had a deadset ding-donger until overpowered the final 50m. Salford Art was not too bad as she was sent up wide midrace handy but stuck on okay all things considered. Skybird was an eyecatcher the latter stages after settling down second last. Madonna Mia was just a fair seventh and it was not the same mare that had bolted in at her prior outing. Grey Guru was never on the track and was four-wide across the top so the fact he did not drop out and kept one-batting for eighth was brave. The rest were disappointing although Guarantor can be give another chance as he needs to settle better and not waste energy in the running racing too keenly. Weregoingtogetcha was too good for these at a luxurious 54.5kg and now in form should hold it. Interestingly at this very meeting in 2013 he won the 3yo event and that day beat a rival convincingly into second called Kawi, which won the G2 feature today one race prior. King Kamada is developing the almost tag as does seem to struggle to win at the moment with his last success coming eleven months ago.
