First blood to Maygrove in cup build-up

3 minute read

Round one went to Maygrove on Saturday, but Gentil Tonton will get his opportunity to try and turn the tables in the near future.

Both six-year-olds have been set for next month’s Gr.3 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup at Riccarton on November 12 and they furthered their causes at Rotorua when quinellaing the Listed Jakkalberry Classic.

The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Maygrove had to give Gentil Tonton six kilos and he did that in fine style with the well-performed gelding taking major honours under rider Michael Coleman.

“He’s a good horse and he’s been consistent all the way through, especially going left-handed,” he said.

“I had a look back at his Awapuni Gold Cup win on a heavy track and even with 60kg today that gave me confidence.”

Maygrove settled toward the back of the field before Coleman let him stride around runners to take control at the top of the straight.

“He travelled sweetly and we probably got there too soon, but you can’t lose momentum in that ground,” Coleman said.

They surged clear and had enough in reserve to score by one and a quarter lengths.

Maygrove was making only the second appearance of his current campaign following a sound fifth when resuming at Hastings behind Humidor, who finished second in the Gr.1 Livamol Classic on the final day of the Hawke’s Bay carnival.

The grey subsequently missed two races due to rain-affected going and his connections had little choice other than to run him on Saturday to keep him on a path to Christchurch.

Gentil Tonton’s co-trainer Andrew Scott said the Irish-bred gelding also had to run well on Saturday to remain in the cup mix and he delivered with a bold late run for second.

The Listed 1950m was run on a bog track and saw heavy trackers and mudders prevail all day. Maygrove sat back and wide before sweeping into contention deeper across the top and then contemptuously took the lead turning for home under his 60kg. The Australian bred 6yo grey gelding swam clear and scored by a comfortable length and a quarter in 2:10.35 for his seventh win in thirty-six starts. The dual G2 winner can add a Listed success to his stamina record and his career successes have all come between 1800m to 2400m tellingly. Gentil Tontan ran home stoutly for second after being sixth or seventh the inside then working off across the top but did get 6kg from the winner it should be noted. Like the winner he is on track for the G3 New Zealand Cup (3200) at Riccarton in a month but whether he and Maygrove will have a run in between or need it is purely in the hands of their conditioners. Flyingby ran on gamely for third after settling back. Celebrity Miss was wide throughout handy and reached second across the top before wilting a tad the run home and the race was not run to suit with a clear leader. Letmeby ran on from the rear after being crowded early while the big improver is El Pistola that was fresh up today. The rest struggled in the ground or at the trip. No depth whatsoever in this field and the best two male gallopers formed the quinella with a healthy six length gap between second and third to show utter superiority. The wet tracks still happening in New Zealand halfway through Spring are affecting the worth and legitimacy of the form.
