Gate staff get thanks from century maker

3 minute read

Anna Jones was grateful to the efforts of the barrier attendants at New Plymouth in helping her to reach a memorable milestone in her career on Saturday.

The Matamata apprentice rode her 100th winner when she got Our King Sway home at the head of the field in the Gr.3 Platinum Homes Taranaki Cup.

“I want to thank the boys at the gates, he wasn’t being easy and they got him in,” Jones said.

“It’s definitely a win to remember and I would like to also thank all the trainers and owners who have supported me.”

Our King Sway was allowed time to find his feet before the Glenn Old-trained gelding picked up ground 800 metres from home.

“He was lovely and settled and I got off the rail hitting the back straight and I followed Nashville around,” Jones said.

Our King Sway held a sustained run to wear down Overtheriver, who went to the front a long way from home, and Cruiser continued his genuine run of form with his third placing.

“It was pretty comfortable in the end,” Jones said. “He had been knocking on the door and when the rain came it was just perfect for him.”

Saturday’s success was the second at stakes level for Jones, who won last season’s Listed Westbury Classic at Avondale aboard the Karyn McQuade-trained Kindaleica.

Taranaki Cup (G3)

WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

This G3 Open Handicap over 1800m ended up a mostly wet trackers finish with the New Plymouth track dreadfully biased at this stage for backrunners and wide scouting swoopers. The worst ridden runners were rewarded rather than being penalized and that meant the pendulum had swung too far today regarding track bias. Our King Sway settled down last and was detached at times before sweeping around widest across the top and up too an ominous fourth turning for home. He gained the upper hand with 50m to go and the winning rider, apprentice Anna Jones, stood high in the irons in celebration on the line and was spoken too by stewards reading this celebratory gesture. The 6yo wet tracker Our King Sway had not won a race for over ten months and this was his first attempt at blacktype. He won by a long neck in 1:53.64 carrying the minimum 53kg and recorded his fourth win from twenty-six starts, all of which have come on slow or heavy footing. Our King Sway is consistent though it should be noted with finishing in the top four to date eighteen times and the top five an impressive twenty-three of his twenty-six starts. Overtheriver was a brave second as he sat wide then took the front midrace and carried 60kg, so gave 7kg to his conqueror. What made his effort even better was he can swim but is not a true wet tracker in the sense of the word. Today was just his second try at 1800m or more for placings each time on wet footing. Cruiser was a close up third after sitting sixth then moving up fourth turning for home. He kept coming carrying 55kg to reach third at the 100m and continued to fight all the way to the wire. Twoznotenough sat fifth then moved up second across the top and tried hard to finish fourth. Effectav ran on well for fifth from back in the field then improving wide in the better lanes across the top. She is just a three-win mare so was out of her grade greatly and in fact tackling black type, like the winner, for the first time. All Roads the clear favourite was ridden closer than normal on settling but was a million to one when on the inside and racing in the no go lanes. He was held up a tad across the top but his rider stayed the fence turning for home and that was the end of any hope for punters. The gelding had not spent an extra penny in the running but lost many pounds in the treacherous go slow lanes to finish sixth beaten just under four lengths. It is a total forgive run and back to proper footing he will form reverse. Nomisma ran home okay late albeit distant for seventh and is near another win but needs a roomier track. Nashville moved earlier than normal from the back and was up second near the home turn only to weaken so his racing days may be coming to an end unless he is tried as a jumper. Pentathlon never copped the footing fresh up but will improve quickly for the hitout while Maid Of Steel compounded badly and Alcadesa was outclassed. This is only a relevant result for wet tracks in the main so in effect is irrelevant for blacktype on better footing. On decent footing the result would likely be completely different and especially so if the inside lanes were not the go slow areas they were today.
