Royal run continues for Price

3 minute read

Jason Price is aiming to add further black type honours to a family that has served him so well.

Along with his wife Kelly and her brother Michael Hall, the Matamata horseman has enjoyed outstanding success with the Perfectly Ready mare Queen Boudicca.

She won two races and collected a Group Two placing for them, but she has been most effective in the broodmare role.

Her first foal Aloisia had two starts from Price’s stable and finished second at Trentham before her sale to OTI Racing. She subsequently finished runner-up in last season’s Gr.1 J. J. Atkins (1600m) and recently went one better to claim the Gr.1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.

The daughter of Azamour will run in Saturday’s Gr.2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m) ahead of the A$1 million Gr.1 VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on November 9.

Queen Boudicca then produced the Keeper filly Wyetta, who will step out in Saturday’s Listed Wellesley Stakes (1200m) at Trentham.

Third on debut, she too has been purchased by OTI and will remain with Price for the short term.

“She got through the ground quite well at Pukekohe and I thought 800m might have been a bit sharp for her so we were quite pleased,” Price said.

“There’s no plan for her at this stage. I’m very happy with her and she hasn’t had a lot of pressure put on her yet and is still learning, but hopefully we can get a bit of black type.”

Price said they will sell a half-brother to Aloisia and Wyetta at Karaka in 2018 while the mare has recently foaled a colt by Dalghar.

“She’s going to be served by Preferment next,” he said.
