Trevor and Martin Cruz are keeping Packing Eagle’s training regime as varied as possible in their quest for a Group One double with the accomplished sprinter.

The Cambridge-based siblings produced the New Zealand-bred son of Pins for his first win on home soil when the former Hong Kong galloper blitzed his rivals in last month’s Gr.3 Sweynesse Stakes(1215m) at Rotorua.

“We were very happy after that, he finally got the better ground he needs and he showed what he can do,” Trevor Cruz said.

“If we run him in handicaps he’ll get 62 or 63kg and he’ll be conceding too much weight to the others so the only options are weight-for-age and set weights and penalties races.

“The Railway Stakes and the Telegraph are the two races on the cards. It’s now just a matter of keeping him ticking along, he pulled up well and he’s happy in himself.

“He quite likes the treadmill, it’s a great tool to save his legs, and he’s a good swimmer. It does him good, when you ride him at the track he pulls quite hard.”

Cruz said they wouldn’t be tempted to run Packing Eagle, who won a 1200m trial at Cambridge last week, beyond sprinting trips.

“They tried to turn him into a miler in Hong Kong and he did run third to Maurice in the Champions’ Mile, but he kept getting annihilated at a mile after that.

“He has run exceptionally at 1200 and 1400m, he has got great sprinting form.”

Packing Eagle raced as Packing Pins in Hong Kong where he won six races, five of them in a row.–
